Mill projects continue to grow [The News Virginian, Waynesboro, Va.]

Oct. 07--One of Waynesboro's biggest projects continues to grow. Nearly a year after Blue Springs Development of Charlottesville and the Rebkee Co. of Richmond closed on a $1.75 million deal to purchase The Mill at South River in Waynesboro, new businesses have found a home inside the nearly 500,000 square feet structure.

In what also houses the health department and offices, three businesses have recently moved in to the location at Arch Avenue and 12th Street.

Albemarle Therapy opened in the Spring, Bake'mmm Bagels opened two weeks ago and Fuller's Orthopedic moved in last month.

"One of the city's key strategic initiatives is to work with owners and developers, like The Mill at South River to encourage capital investment and job creation," said Greg Hitchin, the city's director of economic development. "The city and region have seen recent growth in new businesses like these, and with expansion of existing businesses. We are working continuously to insure that trend continues."

Albemarle Therapy Center

A service out of Charlottesville that just opened a branch in Waynesboro, the location aids children. It features treatment rooms, sensory-motor gyms with suspended swings, climbing structures and more. Albemarle Therapy Center works with children who have down syndrome, autism, asperger's, neurological disorders and other conditions.

"Things have been going great," said Molly Zarski, owner, director and physical therapist. "We have been moving along. We opened July 16th. [We opened] it because we knew there was a need in this area ... I needed big space with high ceilings. It's been great. The only problem we have is sometimes people can't find us."

Fuller's Orthopedic

A business offering custom orthotics (braces, artificial limbs) and prosthetic services, it is currently operating on an every-other-week schedule and will likely be functioning weekly at the beginning of the year, owner Bryan Fuller said.

So far, business has done well.</p>

"I'm getting some referrals and things are looking good," Fuller said.

Fuller added that he moved into the building because of its location and it being a cost-effective place for him to start the businesses.

Bake'mmm Bagels

Bake'mmm Bagels is a business where you can order organic, healthy bagels that haven't been baked, and you just bake them in the oven at 450 degrees for about 10 minutes.

It recently moved from Verona and supplies bagels to Whole Foods and other markets, making an array of flavors.

By October 20, the operation will have a retail store at the Mill where they will sell food to go.

Moving forward

Down the road, owners will explore the potential of housing. There is approximately 300,000 square feet that can accommodate new tenants, which means quite the potential for growth.
