Meeting notes [Daily Record, The (Wooster, OH)]

Proquest LLC

DAR

The Wooster-Wayne Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met at Des Dutch Essenhaus for its annual Constitution Day dinner recently. After the opening ritual, Regent Ann Tschantz reported she has done seven presentations on the Constitution to first-grade classes throughout the county. Wayne Mutual Insurance has provided the funds for Constitution Day packets, which were assembled and distributed to first-grade teachers. There was also a Constitution Day display at the Orrville Public Library throughout September. Ideas for next year's Constitution Day were discussed.

Tammy Hodge and Char Graf attended the fall conference in Columbus and reported on information from several committees represented there. Members will participate in the Celebrate America! committee's project of documenting club hours of "meaningful community service." The Commemorative Events committee marked the 100th anniversary of the U.S.S. Maine Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. Thanks to the efforts of the DAR in Havana, the mast was removed from the U.S.S. Maine and then installed at the cemetery with a memorial, dedicated in 1913 to the 26 sailors and Marines who died in the sinking of the ship.

Cheryl Abernathy gave the program on the delegates to the Constitutional Convention. On May 25, 1787 the Constitutional Convention opened to discuss revising the Articles of Confederation. On Sept. 17, 1787, 39 delegates from the 12 states signed and approved the Constitution.

The gathering for October will be at the Apple Creek Historical Society Pioneer Fest on Saturday. The November meeting will be a presentation and tour at Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman. Carpooling is available.

Members will once again collect quarters and toiletries for the veterans at Hilltop Villa.

Silver Trowel Garden Club

Members of Silver Trowel Garden Club met Sept. 24 at the home of Suzy Auble, who served as hostess for the club's annual Herb and Veggie dinner. Co-hostesses were Connie Miller and Jenny Smucker.

On behalf of members, incoming club president Wilma Raynor recognized and thanked Barb Bupp, Janet Stevic and Sue Vernon for securing an interesting array of speakers and unique meeting destinations for the coming year, and compiling and distributing program booklets to members. Other new incoming club officers include Rita McAllister as secretary and Jenny Curtis, treasurer. Carolyn Roadruck will continue as club historian.

The club's Oct. 29 meeting will be at Halterman Hall at ATI in Wooster.

Wooster Community Hospital Auxiliary Board

At its September meeting, the board of the Wooster Community Hospital Auxiliary was pleased to review financial statements that reflected healthy income from its major funding centers, including Ways and Means, Medic Alert, Cafe and Gift Shop. These revenues enable donations to the hospital, such as the new transportation van purchased this year and free valet parking. In addition, the annual golf outing netted over $8,000 for the mammogram project. Thanks was expressed to many generous patrons and donors and to Roxanne Hammer and Dale Curan for all their work for this event. The concert presented this summer by John Schmid at the OARDC Streeter Arboretum was well-attended. Profits from this event benefit both the auxiliary and Schmid's prison ministry.

The Auxiliary Gift Shop will be adding monogrammed hospital clothing for all ages, including babies. The Cafe will be adding sub sandwiches to the menu selections.

Green Point Garden has provided lots of fresh produce this year, some of which was sold at the Cafe. Apples and cherry tomatoes are now in abundance. The board thanked the many community groups and individuals who have volunteered labor and time to the garden this year.

A new fundraiser, a Cookie Exchange, will be held on Dec. 19 at the hospital atrium. The Tree of Love Ceremony will be held Dec. 3. The fall annual meeting will be held Nov. 20 at 4 p.m. and will include installation of officers. The nominations committee is receiving names for open board positions that begin in January.

Updated policies were distributed for a first reading, and will be considered by the board at the next meeting on Oct. 16.

Wooster Country Club Ladies 18-Hole Golf Association

The Wooster Country Club Ladies 18-Hole Golf Association concluded its 2013 season with a fun day on Sept. 17. The winner was Diane Gordon, with Dottie Loreth coming in second. The champion for this summer's Young Gals tournament was the team of Brenda McGurk and Crystal Spurgeon. The winner of the handicap match play tournament was Alex Musselman.
