Maidens narrowly fall to Frenship

The Lake View High School girls basketball team nearly upset district-leading Frenship on Tuesday before falling 46-41 on its home court at Ben Norton Gym.

The Maidens, though still winless in district, battled with Frenship and outscored the Lady Tigers in the third and fourth quarters after trailing 32-18 at halftime.

Lake View was within 42-34 entering the final quarter, and the Maidens whittled the deficit to three points with about a minute remaining before Frenship was able to hang on and improve to 18-7 overall and 7-1 in District 4-4A play.

The Maidens (5-15, 0-8) will play their home finale at 6 p.m. Friday against the other district co-leader, Plainview.

Lady Cats respond after early deficit

The Central High School girls soccer team rallied from an early deficit Tuesday to win on the road over Midland Lee, 3-1, led by a goal and two assists from senior Morgan Upshaw.

After Lee scored in the 10th minute, the Lady Cats responded with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Upshaw scored the equalizer off an assist from Caisi Dornhecker. Kirsten Yancey then scored the go-ahead goal off Upshaw's assist.

Dani Black gave Central an insurance goal in the second half after another Upshaw assist.

"We play didn't well in the first half and still managed two goals," Central head coach Ben Henry said. "In the second half, we settled down and held possession."

Central improved to 4-2 overall, 2-1-0 in district for six points, while Lee fell to 3-2-1, 1-1-0 for three points.

The Lady Cats will play again at 2 p.m. Saturday when they host Abilene Cooper.

Chiefs open district with shutout win

The Lake View High School boys soccer team opened District 7-4A play Tuesday with a 2-0 win at Frenship.

After a scoreless first half, the Chiefs scored three minutes into the second half when Erik Rivera scored off an Anthony Moreno assist. It was Moreno's team-leading sixth assist of the season.

Lake View made it 2-0 in the 62nd minute when Moreno scored off a David Padilla assist.

The Chiefs improved to 5-2-3 overall, 1-0-0-0 in district play. Frenship fell to 5-5-0, 0-0-0-1.

Lake View will play again at 5 p.m. Friday when it hosts Lubbock Monterey at San Angelo Stadium.

Bobcats edged on road by Midland Lee

The Central High School boys soccer team fell 2-1 Tuesday at Midland Lee.

Central's Hayden Black scored on a penalty kick near the end of the first half to tie the game 1-1 at halftime. Lee scored the game-winner about 10 minutes into the second half.

Central fell to 1-4-2 overall and 0-2-1 in District 2-5A play. Lee moved to 6-1-0, 2-0-0.

"Lee is probably one of the better teams in district, and we played them hard all the way the entire game," Central head coach Tony Vu said. "I'm proud of my guys' effort. We're definitely headed in the right direction. Thankfully for us, the district season is still young, so there's plenty more games. And we're definitely getting better every time we step on the field."

Central will play again at noon Saturday when it hosts Abilene Cooper.

Maidens blanked by 7-4A rival Frenship

The Lake View High School girls soccer team fell 6-0 in its District 7-4A opener Tuesday against Frenship at San Angelo Stadium.

The Maidens trailed 1-0 at halftime before Frenship scored twice off free kicks outside the box to take a 3-0 lead.

"We had a couple silly fouls," Lake View head coach Jill Baker said.

The Lady Tigers then blitzed Lake View in the final 15 minutes after sweeper Cassandra Pena went down with a knee injury.

"She's pretty much the leader of the defense and controls the back," Baker said. "We had to shift everyone around and then it just kind of fell apart."

Lake View fell to 0-5, 0-0-0-1 in district. Frenship moved to 8-1-2, 1-0-0-0. The Maidens will play again at 5 p.m. Friday when they travel to Lubbock Monterey.

Chiefs overwhelmed

by No. 20 Frenship

The Lake View High School boys basketball team lost 74-39 to No. 20-ranked Frenship on Tuesday on its home court at Ben Norton Gym.

The Chiefs fell to 4-16 overall, 0-6 in District 4-4A, while Frenship improved to 23-4, 6-0.

Lake View will play again at 7:30 p.m. Friday when it hosts Plainview.
