Kayaks, Senior Driving Are Elanco Adult Ed Topics

Row, row, row your boat - or rather, your kayak - down the stream after building it.

Mark Kaufman will teach you how to "Build your own Greenland Skin- on-Frame Kayak" during a course at Garden Spot High School.

The popular course, which will be held in Room 705, is one of two adult education classes being offered at the Eastern Lancaster County School District.

Kaufman, who teaches advanced woodworking at the district, offers students the choice to build one of four styles of kayaks - two West Greenland styles, an East Greenland style or an Aleutian style baidarka.

By the end of the class, each student will have an elegant replica of a traditional Greenland or Aleutian-style skin-on-frame kayak ready for the water.

The class meets Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. starting Feb. 10 and ending April 28. (There will be no class on April 21).

Tuition is $400. The fee for the materials and kit should be paid to the instructor. The rates are as follows: 16'4" West Greenland kayak, $1,000; 17'10" West Greenland kayak, $1,050; 18'8" East Greenland kayak, $1,100; and 19' Aleutian style baidarka kayak, $1,200.

The class is limited to six participants.

The second adult-education class being offered by Elanco is a "4- Hour Refresher AARP Smart Driver Course." It is being held on Tuesday, March 25, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Garden Spot High School Community Hall.

Art Rettew, certified AARP instructor, will teach the class for persons who previously completed an eight-hour class. The four-hour refresher class will fulfill the requirements for an insurance discount for insurers doing business in Pennsylvania.

All participants must bring evidence of previous course completion, plus their driver's license, to class.

Cost is $20. AARP members will be charged only $15. Payment is due at class. Checks should be made payable to AARP.

Both the kayak and the AARP classes require registration. Registration forms are available at the Elanco School District Office at 669 E. Main St., New Holland, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
