Insurance Carriers Announce Individual Disability Insurance Policy Enhancements for Federal Government Employees and Federally Employed Physicians
| PR Web |
For years, the individual disability insurance policies available to Federal employees and physicians were restricted based on the individual’s age and total number of years of civilian service. With these new modifications, many of these individuals will now be able to obtain an individual disability insurance policy, which provides more comprehensive income protection in the event of a disability.
Some of the enhancements that will now be available include, but are not limited to:
• Federal employees and physicians will now be treated as having employer-provided, group long-term disability insurance that covers 40% of their income, which is reflective of the FERS retirement disability benefits. This will allow for greater supplemental benefit amounts then available in the past.
• The number of years of service one has will no longer impact eligibility or benefit levels.
• Coverage is now available to individuals at more advanced ages than before. Berkshire will offer coverage up to age 60.
• Maximum benefit levels have been increased which provides higher-wage earners the ability to protect a greater percentage of their income than before.
The individual disability insurance policies offered are intended to supplement benefits that are provided through the Federal Employee Retirement System (FERS). For more information on FERS benefits, visit FERS disability retirement benefits.
