Institute of Internal Auditors Names LSUCIA Alumnus Sawyer Research Award Winner

BATON ROUGE, La., Aug. 26 -- Louisiana State University issued the following news release:

The Institute of Internal Auditors honored LSU Center for Internal Auditing alumnus Andrew Carmichael with the Esther R. Sawyer Research Award at its 73rd IIA International Conference, held in London in June. Carmichael, who earned his bachelor's degree in finance last May and was an honors student, is the fourth consecutive and sixth LSUCIA alumnus overall to earn this international award.

"I had a wonderful time in London at the IIA International Conference," Carmichael said. "I am glad we were able to maintain the strong LSU tradition with both this contest and the award fellow alumnus Laust Helmig received as well."

Helmig, who graduated in 2011, earned IIA's Glenn E. Sumners Student Highest Achievement Award, which IIA presented to him in June. He is the 19th LSUCIA alumnus to receive the award.

According to IIA, the annual Esther R. Sawyer Research Award from the IIA Research Foundation is granted to an individual currently enrolled by Sept. 1 in an undergraduate or graduate level program in internal auditing at an Internal Auditing Education Partnership university. Individuals who have completed their coursework in an internal auditing program at an IAEP university by March 30 of the submission year are also welcome to participate. The award is based on submission of an original manuscript on a specific topic related to modern internal auditing. The 2014 competition topic involved describing primary organizational stakeholders, defining a successful Chief Audit Executive and determining an essential skillset to yield a high probability of success.

Carmichael received a $5,000 cash award and an expense-paid trip to London for the conference. Additionally, IIA awarded LSUCIA $3,000.

The Center for Internal Auditing at LSU's E. J. Ourso College of Business is a multidisciplinary program with students from many different business and non-business majors and is considered the premier internal audit program in the world. LSUCIA serves as a model for similar university programs internationally and provides training to graduate and undergraduate students to develop an understanding of the internal auditing profession, which encompasses governance, risk, enterprise risk management, controls, and technology.
