Hugh J. Boyd Jr. Elementary School Re-Opens After Disaster Recovery from Hurricane Sandy

Students have entered the 2013 school year with a fresh start. The Hugh J. Boyd Jr. Elementary School reopened this fall for the first time since Superstorm Sandy struck the Northeast last October.

In addition to leaving many students and their families homeless, the storm significantly damaged the elementary school, forcing classes to resume in a wing of a nearby high school.

Peaking at a Category 3, Hurricane Sandy is the largest Atlantic hurricane on record. As a post-tropical cyclone, the storm swept through Brigantine, N.J. with hurricane-force winds, resulting in an estimated $40 million worth of damage to schools across New Jersey.

Using primarily insurance and federal emergency funds, the district completed a $2.5 million, three-to five-year renovation plan in merely nine months. Boyd School’s renovations include a new roof, structure, and furniture for the 265 Pre-K through 6th grade students. Until now, the Seaside Heights elementary school was one of a handful of remaining schools in the state that had not yet reopened for students.

"This is a moment for us to turn the page, everybody, and go on to the next 100 years of great family memories and lives that are going to be built here every day in this great town," said Governor Chris Christie.
