House catches fire, displaces family of five

Jan. 31--The Midway Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 306 Horse Farm Road at 10:45 p.m. Midway Fire Chief Mike Craft said firefighters arrived to find flames showing through the roof.

Firefighters immediately went to one side of the house where flames were blowing out and successfully prevented an adjacent residence from catching fire, Craft said. Other firefighters went into the residence to fight the fire.

Craft said the home is a total loss. The cause of the fire Friday morning was listed as undetermined. It was also unclear where the fire originated.

The occupants of the home escaped injury. The Midway VFD identified one of the occupants as Jacob Tarr and stated the family didn't have renter's insurance.

The Griffith, A-RC-H, Wallburg, Welcome and Gumtree volunteer fire departments, as well as the Davidson County Fire Marshal's Office and Davidson County EMS, assisted Midway firefighters. Craft said he needed multiple fire departments to respond because of a lack of water.

The nearest hydrant, the chief said, was more than 2,000 feet away from the residence. Midway firefighters didn't leave the scene until 5 a.m. Friday. Craft said firefighters remained in hopes the fire wouldn't rekindle.

No firefighters were injured in the incident. Craft said firefighters battled the fire when it was 15 degrees. Firefighters who went inside the home had water freezing on them. Craft said firefighters rotated in and out of fire trucks to stay warm.
