NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Hartford Financial Services Group has received preliminary approval from a federal judge to settle a class action lawsuit involving 21,000 people nationwide for $72.5 million. The plaintiffs alleged The Hartford fraudulently deducted up to 15 percent of their settlements in injury cases. The Hartford says it's settling to avoid the uncertainly and costs of litigation.
NORWALK, Conn. (AP) _ Norwalk police say the bodies of a mother and daughter were found in a city duplex this morning. Police tell The Advocate of Stamford that they've identified a suspect in what they're calling a double homicide and are looking for that person. The victims' names and ages haven't been released, and other details aren't available.
MILFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Authorities have reopened all northbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Milford where a crash involving three tractor-trailers caused a major traffic jam during the morning commute. State police say two drivers suffered minor injuries in the crash, which happened at about 4:30 a.m. between exits 40 and 41. All northbound lanes were closed for several hours. The cause remains under investigation.
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ A West Hartford man who cut off most of his left arm after it got stuck in his home's boiler is getting a new furnace free of charge. East Hartford-based Automatic TLC Energy says it's donating the furnace to Jonathan Metz and installing it today. Metz remains hospitalized. His arm got stuck while he was working on his furnace on June sixth and was rescued three days later.
