Health club chain coming to Gateway

Roger Bull
By Roger Bull
Proquest LLC

Youfit Health Clubs is coming to Gateway Town Center on Norwood Avenue. The national chain has signed a 10-year lease on a 17,678- square-foot space for its first location in Jacksonville. Opening is expected in August.

Contracts start at $10 a month.

Youfit has 48 clubs in Florida, but the only two north of Orlando are in Tallahassee. An employee in the Winter Park club said they usually hire about 16 to 18 people.

With Youfit, Gateway will be 44 percent occupied.CENTENE

Centene Sunshine Health got its building permit for tenant improvement at 5210 Belfort Road 0200: $188,000,10,364 square feet, Dav Lin Interior Contractors. The city OK'd incentives last month after the Centene said it would add 125 employees in Jacksonville with an average salary of $48,814 per year. It currently has 107 employees here.M SHACK

In March, I reported that Matthew Medure had signed a letter of intent, but not a lease, to open an M Shack in the Shoppes on Riverside. He thought he would make a decision by the end of April.

But he hasn't. He's still looking around and trying to decide.WHOLE FOODS

Whole Foods Market has a plan to open 1,000 stores in markets it never considered before, Forbes has reported. That would include smaller stores in smaller markets and big stores in some of the decidedly non-yuppie neighborhoods of Detroit and Chicago.

As far as a second store in Jacksonville or someplace else in Northeast Florida, a Whole Foods spokesman simply said: "At this time we have no plans to open additional stores in the area."ALMOST ALL DINING

Last year, I did a story about how dining and services (hair salons, nail salons, etc.) are taking over strip shopping centers. There's not much pure retail in them anymore.

The other day, I was in the Baymeadows Festival center, anchored by Gators Dockside. There is a Dollar Tree right in the middle of it. But otherwise, it's almost all food: Dockside, an Italian going in where Indian Express was, subs, takeout pizza, Persian and a sausage deli opening soon.ETC.

Although it's not final, Pollack Shores Real Estate Group is leaning toward the name of Brooklyn Riverside for its 310-unit apartment complex on Riverside Avenue. The first units are expected to be finished late this year with completion early next.

A reader asked about a fence going up around 7147 Merrill Road. Fifth Third Bank owns the lot but has no plans to build a bank there anytime soon, a spokeswoman said. The fence is just to secure the property.

Dean and Tangela Eddy have opened a Truly Nolen pest control franchise service in St. Augustine and Palm Coast.

Bob Miller and his daughter, Cheryl, have opened a Brightway Insurance office on U.S. 1 in St. Augustine.SALES
