GIRLS SOCCER: Price provides insurance goals in Bonneville win

Ryan Comer, Standard-Examiner, Ogden, Utah

McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

Aug. 23--WASHINGTON TERRACE -- Bonneville High sophomore Makensie Price enjoys kicking from distance because she can use as much power as she wants.

Price has also learned how to keep those shots low to the ground -- a skill that proved useful Saturday in her team's 3-0 non-region win over Tooele.

Price found the back of the net twice in the second half with both shots coming from outside the 18.

"It's actually been a lot of work for me to get over the ball," Price said. "I used to launch them every day. I used to kick field goals all the time. But I've got to the point where I know how to kick it to stay low."

Price scored her first goal in the 54th minute and added her second in the 70th.

The first goal afforded Bonneville some breathing room after a difficult first half where Tooele kept finding ways to thwart scoring opportunities.

"You never know -- if you're only up 1-0, one fluke goal and that can change the whole game," Bonneville coach Rob McDaniel said. "It was good to get a little bit of distance. We wanted more, of course. We felt we should have had more, but their keeper did a great job. That's the bottom line. She made some good saves. We had a lot of balls that went right to her, but she worked and made some really good saves."

Overall, Bonneville attempted 16 shots on goal.

The victory got Bonneville back into the win column after it suffered its first loss of the season Thursday, a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Roy.

Hannah Shore gave Bonneville its first goal of the game in the eighth minute after winning a one-on-one with Tooele keeper Trista Fackrell.

Bonneville had a flurry of opportunities midway through the first half, but Sierra Paskins was caught from behind on a breakaway in the 22nd minute and Savannah Giles hit the crossbar in the 23rd. Giles had another close-range shot in the 26th minute, but was stopped by Fackrell.

Fackrell continued to keep Tooele in the game throughout the rest of the first half and made a leaping deflection on a Katelyn Hancock shot in the 40th minute that pushed the ball off the crossbar.

Tooele nearly got its equalizer in the 44th minute when Bonneville keeper Kyra McDowell dropped a free kick that rattled around in the box, but Bonneville managed to force a corner which was subsequently cleared.

McDowell and teammate Sydney Christensen split the shutout, their third of the season.
