Davenport boys own Walshe title [The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y.]

Sept. 30--Kyle Moorby, Cody Wamsley and Paul Clark scored two goals apiece, and host Davenport cruised to a surprisingly lopsided, 6-0 boys soccer victory over South Kortright in the championship game of the Chic Walshe Tournament on Saturday.

"We did," Davenport coach Deb Moorby said when asked if her team played as well as the score indicates. "It was an intense game the whole time. There were moments when we went back and forth, but the kids had good passes and throughballs, and they capitalized on them."

Davenport's Chris Kopf made seven saves and was the named the tournament's MVP.

Kyle Moorby opened the scoring 18:55 into play. He headed in a throw-in from Travis Briggs.

"Right into the 6," Moorby said of Briggs' throw-in. "Kyle was right there and headed it in. He was right next to the goalie, almost on the goal line."

Wamsley finished a crossing pass from Michael Libby to make it 2-0 and the Wildcats' lead expanded to three when Clark scored of a pass from Josh Wood 1:55 before halftime.

Briggs, who had four assists, Wamsley and Moorby made the all-tournament team for Daveport. Dan Nelson, Ryan Sluiter and Dan Fronckowiak were all tournament selections for the Rams.

Davenport (10-1) will travel to Hunter-Tannersville on Thursday.

Cooperstown 5, Worcester 0

Cooperstown's Park Summers converted a give-and-go from Jordan Manikas to open the scoring 1:31 into the consolation game of the Chic Walshe Tournament at Davenport.

Manikas followed with three goals and Max Clinton scored another for Cooperstown (5-3), which also got three assists from Summers. Manikas and Summers earned all-tournament honors.

Sweeper David Zoltick helped preserve the shutout for goalie Kevin Frevele (three saves) with a header for a defensive save eight seconds before halftime.

"Kevin got caught out of the box, but David dropped into the goal and headed out a sure goal," Cooperstown coach Frank Miosek said. "David is a solid defender with great game instincts."

Greene Tournament

Antonio Gomes scored twice and Downsville held Gilbertsville-Mount Upton to two shots en route to a 2-0 victory in the consolation game of the Greene Tournament on Saturday.

Gomes opened the scoring midway through the first half. He received a throughball from Billy Smith and scored on a low shot to the left corner.

Chance Byington sent a throughball to Gomes in the second half, and Downsville's speedy forward finished it with about 20 minutes left.

The host school beat Downsville, 2-0, in a first-round game Friday. Dylan Fisk made six saves for the Eagles, who placed Zach Doig and Anthony Shields on the all-tournament team.

Lucas Seneck and Austin Burnside earned all-tournament honors for G-MU.

Downsville (5-4) will play at Jefferson today.

Roxbury 2, Stamford 0

Kris Walcutt had a goal and an assist to lead Roxbury to victory in the championship game of the Hunter-Tannersville Tournament.

Walcutt started the scoring midway through the first half with a hard, low shot that beat Stamford goalie Ken Ward (eight saves). He then assisted tournament MVP Joe McAfee on an insurance goal with 2:25 to go before halftime.

Winning goalie and all-tournament selection Jacob Davis made one save for the Rockets, who visit Downsville on Tuesday.

Windham 4, H-T 0

Aiden Cohane and Zach Meyer each contributed a goal and an assist to lead visiting Windham to a consolation victory in Hunter-Tannersville Tournament.

Cohane scored from 6 yards three minutes into play off an assist from Meyer.

Meyer's header from 6 yards came about three minutes later. Cohane earned the assist.

Malcolm Seamans scored off a double assist from Ed Moran and Toras Korostil with 10 minutes remaining in the half to give the Warriors a 3-0 cushion at halftime.

Joe Pelham contributed an unassisted goal from 22 yards to cap the scoring with seven minutes left.

Anthony Younes and Cohane were selected to the all-tournament team.

Ryan Radcliffe had 12 saves for H-T (2-6, 1-3), which will visit Margaretville on Tuesday.

Unatego 3, Afton 0

Spencer Wilson scored twice and Jasper Humphries contributed a goal to lead Unatego to a Midstate Athletic Conference victory.

Wilson's first goal came on a penalty kick. His initial shot was saved by Matt Olin, but Wilson followed the shot and scored on the rebound.

Johnathan Forte set up Wilson's second goal with a throughball five minutes into the second half.

Afton (1-6-1) is at Afton at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

B-G 2, Oxford 1

Daniel Norris headed in the winner 30 seconds into overtime as Bainbridge-Guilford edged visiting Oxford in the MAC.

Ethan Monk put the Blackhawks ahead with an unassisted goal three minutes into the second half, but Adam Bauerle tied it with 6:30 left.

Doug Lee and Kyle Hanvey had assists for the Bobcats, who received five saves from Brandt McCall.

Delhi 3, Norwich 0

Mitch Reed and Jake Zinkievich each finished with a goal and an assist to lead Delhi to a MAC victory on the road.

Russell Cobane also scored for the Bulldogs (5-3), who received six saves from Leon Cohen in the shutout.

Margaretville 2, Milford 1

Kyle Short ended the game three minutes into overtime with a goal off a pass from Roberto Sarabia as Margaretville remained undefeated with a non-league victory at the Wright National Soccer Campus in Oneonta.

"They intercepted a pass and Sarabia laid it off to Short and boom, it was over," said Milford coach Frank Spurchise, whose team fought off 12 corner kicks by the Blue Devils (9-0). "They're a very good team, as always. The bottom line is they're a skilled team that passes very well and they know where each other is on the field."

Victor Mendoza assisted Sarabia on the opening goal, a 10-yarder to the far post with 12 minutes left in the first half. Peyton Griffiths tied it for Milford (7-2) with 1:30 to go before halftime, converting a pass from Eli Rutledge at close range.

"The second half was kind of back-and-forth at times," Spurchise said. "They have a lot of players and it did work to their advantage because they wore us down a little bit. Having a bench like that, they were subbing in four to five guys at a time. That's a huge benefit.

"They beat Davenport, so they're the team to beat in our section," he continued. "You've got to give them the edge."

Marvin Morales made five saves for the Blue Devils, who held a 9-6 advantage in shots.

Max Lang stopped seven shots for the Wildcats, who visit Richfield Springs on Tuesday.

Laurens 2, RS 0

Leif Ericson scored a goal and had an assist to lead host Laurens to victory in the Tri-Valley League, marking the Leopards' first win of the season.

Ericson scored off a header from 8 yards out six minutes into the second half. It was set up by a direct kick from Jerry Soucia.

Ericson then assisted Mason Weir's goal with 18 minutes left. Weir scored to the near post from 18 yards.

Laurens (1-8-1, 1-7-1) will host Morris today.

CV-S 3, ODY 0

Noah Russo and Wyatt Crowley scored in the last 10 minutes of the first half, leading Cherry Valley-Springfield to a non-league win at home.

Ryan Jaquay set up Russo for the decisive goal 9:16 before halftime. Crowley then converted a pass from Ben Drugatz with 27 seconds to go before the break.

Patrick Reid also scored for the Patriots (9-1), who got three saves from Jeremy Pickett in the shutout.

"As a unit, we played very well," said CV-S coach Terri Adams, whose team held a 10-5 advantage in shots. "Defensively, we really stepped it up."

The Patriots host Richfield Springs today.

GIRLS SOCCER

Morris 1, Worcester 0

McKenna Hungerford scored on a direct kick with 21:58 left, lifting Morris in the championship game of the Chic Walshe Tournament at Davenport.

Hungerford's shot beat goalie Kerrin O'Shaughnessy, who made 12 saves to keep the Wolverines close.

Kaylyn Oliver stopped one shot for the Mustangs (7-2-1), who had the tournament MVP in Haley Wist. Oliver, Hungerford and Alexis Forgit made the all-tournament team, as did Worcester's Madison Wright, Jessica Thompson and Kristina Walsh.

Morris hosts Laurens today.

SK 1, Davenport 0

Brianna Laing scored the winning goal with 33:35 left in the first half to lead visiting South Kortright to a consolation victory in the Chic Walshe Tournament at Davenport.

Laing scored from 12 yards off an assist by Tori Rockefeller.

Kaitlyn Stinson and Burkley Cole were selected to the all-tournament team for South Kortright, which outshot Davenport, 22-5.

Sarah Haight and Abby Wood made the all-tournament team for Davenport.

SK (8-2, 5-0) will host Stamford on Tuesday.

Davenport (8-2, 5-0) will play visiting Delhi today.

Stamford 8, SS 1

Kim Freer scored three goals and had two assists to lead Stamford to a consolation win in the Hunter-Tannersville Tournament.

Freer scored unassisted from 8 yards four minutes into play.

Freer then assisted Gabby Caiazza's goal from 8 yards with 18 minutes left in the first half to make it 2-0.

Stamford then scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Caiazza finished with two goals, and Brandy Fane, Kaitlin Eighmie and Brittany Eighmie also scored for Stamford.

Sweeper Becky Alberti and forward Freer were selected to the all-tournament team for the Indians (3-6), who will visit South Kortright on Tuesday.

Windham 1, H-T 0

Mattie Seamans' corner kick set up Brianna Jaeger's goal with 32:24 left in the second half and host Windham went on to a Delaware League victory.

Jaeger was about a yard out when she scored.

"It's been a really good week for us," said Windham coach Jim Todaro, whose team lost to twice-beaten Davenport, 2-1, Tuesday before beating Downsville, 2-1, in overtime Friday. "I'm definitely proud of the way the girls played this week."

Windham (4-3, 2-3) will host Gilboa on Wednesday.

Samantha Dibbell made 11 saves for Hunter-Tannersville.

Laurens 1, RS 0

Taylor Kessler scored off an assist from Charlotte Lee with 6:14 left in the first overtime to lift host Laurens in the Tri-Valley League.

The Leopards (2-6-1) will travel to Morris today.

Vanessa Miller stopped 10 shots for Richfield Springs.

LF 3, Cooperstown 1

Maggie Hall scored to the far post from the corner for the 18-yard box to tie it at 1 10 minutes into the second half for host Cooperstown, but Little Falls' Maria Morotti scored the winner two minutes later in the Center State Conference game.

"It was a beautiful shot to the back left corner," Cooperstown coach Jennifer Pindar said of Hall's goal.

Morotti finished with two goals for Little Falls (9-0).

Cooperstown (6-2), which received 17 saves from Katie Kleban, will travel to Little Falls on Tuesday.

FOOTBALL

Brandon Macumber caught a pair of touchdown passes from Matt Mills and returned two punts for touchdowns to lead visiting Deposit/Hancock to a Section Four Football Conference Division V victory Friday.

Alex Avolio had 19 rushing yards for the Storm (0-4, 0-2), who will travel to Bainbridge-Guilford (0-4, 0-2) on Friday.

Cooperstown's football team fell to 0-4 with an 18-0 home loss to Morrisville-Eaton on Friday. No other information was available.

CROSS COUNTRY

Herrmann Invitational

Logan Mancuso placed 12th out of 218 boys to help Oneonta earn a sixth-place finish out of 26 teams at the E.J. Herrmann Invitational at Proctor Park in Utica.

Mancuso covered the 3.1-mile course in 17:49 for the Yellowjackets, who got an 18th from Sam Baskin (18:14.6). Duanesburg's Pat Murphy won in 16:53.6.

Jacob Tomlins had Edmeston's top finish (65th, 19:36.8) and Jacob Russell paced Cooperstown (76th, 19:46.2).

OHS finished with 191 points. Sauquoit Valley won at 113.

Cooperstown's Kristin Ratliff crossed less than a minute behind winner Talya Williams of Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons for a third-place finish in the girls race. Williams won in 19:58.3. Ratliff was third in 20:48.6.

Samantha Fanion placed eighth (21:09.1) for Cooperstown, which was fifth at 145 points. Broadalbin-Perth won the team title with 59 points.

Madison Kline finished 25th (22:40.1) to lead Edmeston, which placed 19th. Oneonta was eighth behind top-40 finishes from Missy Emilio (37th, 22:54.6) and Jamie Keown (40th, 23:08.9).

OHS visits Norwich on Tuesday.

<p>McQuaid Invitational

Declan Kottmeier's 18th in the unseeded varsity A-3 boys race paced Delhi during the McQuaid Invitational at Genesee Valley Park in Rochester.

Kottmeier crossed in 16:54.6 for the Bulldogs, who got a 23rd from Alex Legg (17:05.3). Caledonia-Mumford's Everitt Gieger won in 15:40.0.

Katie Aikens had Delhi's top girls finish with a 37th in 20:55.0. Natalie Mogavero of Weedsport won the unseeded varsity A-3 girls title in 18:54.8.

VOLLEYBALL

Deposit 3, Afton 1

Catherine Bush had 15 digs and nine aces to lead Deposit to a 27-25, 22-25, 25-18, 25-22 MAC win on the road.

Alisha Hubbard amassed 17 assists, Domonique Santa-Cruz had 10 digs and Brianne Stevens finished with eight kills for the Crimson Knights (1-8), who visit Sidney on Tuesday. Deposit (7-2) hosts Unatego the same day.
