DSCC: Terri Lynn Land Refuses to Condemn Disgusting Attack on Gary Peters’ Daughters

WASHINGTON, March 21 -- The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee issued the following news release:

Terri Lynn Land is refusing to condemn a disgusting attack from one of her strongest supporters Michigan Right to Life, who endorsed Land last year, and recently charged that Peters "wants to make sure abortion is accessible and cheap for his daughters." Land's silence was followed by Right to Life (https://twitter.com/Right_to_Life/status/446723480151527424) and the Michigan Republican Party (https://twitter.com/llondo/status/446703746341273600) doubling down on their attack of two teenage girls.

Land's silence on the attack mirrors her tacit support (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/dc/terri-lynn-land-gary-peters-michigan-insurance) of Michigan's "rape insurance (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/03/13/michigans-abortion-rider-_n_4958517.html)" law that went into effect this month. The law, which resulted from a ballot initiative sponsored by the same group who attacked Peters' daughters, prevents both public and private insurance companies from covering abortion in Michigan -- even in the case of rape, incest, or medical necessity -- unless a separate "abortion rider" policy is first purchased.

"Terri Lynn Land should immediately condemn this disgusting attack on Gary Peters and his teenage daughters," said Regan Page, Deputy Press Secretary at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. "If Land can't stand up for women who are being forced to purchase rape insurance simply so they can make their own healthcare decisions, or for teenage girls falling victim to political attack, just who can she stand up for? Land has a dangerous record of failing Michigan women, middle class families, and small businesses and Michigan women deserve better."

Land is already on the record supporting a ban on abortion that included no exceptions (http://www.politico.com/story/2014/02/michigan-senate-race-2014-on-the-ground-103704.html) for rape or incest. Land's RNC platform also included additional measures that are dangerous for women and would roll back women's health care rights such as the "Akin Plank" and support for mandatory ultrasound laws.
