DRIVE4COPD Moves 1 Million People to Get Screened and Determine Personal COPD Risk in First Year
COPD, a progressive disease that includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema or both, is the fourth leading cause of death in
"For many, taking the brief, five-question screener may be the first indication that they are at risk for COPD," said
Nearly 20 percent of the people who have taken the screener scored high enough to indicate they may be at risk for COPD. The campaign asks those who identify as at-risk to share the results of the screener with their healthcare professional. All Americans age 35 or older who have smoked 100 cigarettes in their lifetime are encouraged to log onto DRIVE4COPD.COM and be screened.
The true reach of the campaign extends even beyond the 1 million who have taken the screener. In the past year, DRIVE4COPD has touched hundreds of millions more lives by sharing vital information on COPD symptoms and the need to take action. Partnering organizations, committed Celebrity Ambassadors and corporate partners have supported DRIVE4COPD and helped spread the campaign to people across the country. In addition, DRIVE4COPD has collaborated with businesses nationwide to educate their employees and customers about COPD and the importance of getting screened for risk.
"We are thrilled that in just one year, we have already made a mark on reaching the millions of people who may be at risk for COPD," said
This remarkable accomplishment attests to the campaign's success in working to change the way COPD is viewed and addressed in America, but much work remains. COPD is the only leading cause of death in America that is on the rise and still takes one life every four minutes.
This year, the campaign is collaborating with partners on exciting new endeavors to reach the public and continue its work to put the brakes on COPD. Through art, music, sports, live events and online activities, DRIVE4COPD is continuing to educate Americans with the message that early COPD screening and detection may help those with COPD work with their healthcare professionals to breathe easier.

About COPD
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is also known as chronic bronchitis and emphysema. This disease makes it harder to breathe because less air is able to flow in and out of the lungs. As many as 24 million Americans may have COPD – even those who haven't smoked in years – and half of them remain undiagnosed. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in
Common symptoms of COPD include coughing, with or without mucus, or shortness of breath. These symptoms are often confused with normal signs of aging. As COPD progresses, symptoms tend to get worse and more damage occurs in the lungs. Breathing gradually becomes more difficult until people with COPD feel like they are inhaling and exhaling through a small straw.
