Columbus Car Accident Lawyer Henry Acciani Commends New Technology Developers Tackling the Safety Issue of Distracted Teen Driving

PR Web

COLUMBUS, Ohio (PRWEB) March 06, 2014

Henry Acciani, an auto accident lawyer at Columbus-based law firm O’Connor, Acciani & Levy, applauds the work of several technological companies featured in a new blog post who are working to curb distracted teen driving with mobile applications.

Cellphone apps, such as Canary, can be very beneficial for parents concerned about their teen drivers. The app can be installed on a teen’s phone and then alert parents whenever the teen is texting or on social media. Some car insurance companies, such as Esurance and Allstate, also offer apps and hardware to discourage the use of a cellphone while driving.

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the number of people killed in distracted driving accidents decreased slightly between 2011 and 2012, demonstrating that efforts like these are impacting road safety.

“We commend the companies who are working to ensure that teens behind the wheel practice safe driving. However, many adults should also consider looking into how technology can make them a safer driver. Last year, a survey by a large wireless company revealed that more adults than teens are texting and driving – this information is very disconcerting,” said Acciani.

In 2013, AT&T conducted a commuter survey and found that 49 percent of adult commuters admitted to texting and driving – a 6 percent higher rate than teen drivers.

According to the NHTSA, 21 percent of teen drivers involved in fatal car accidents were distracted by their cellphones. Approximately 11 percent of all drivers under the age of 20 involved in fatal crashes were reported as engaging in distracted driving behaviors at the time of the crash.

O’Connor, Acciani & Levy remind drivers that texting and driving is banned in the state of Ohio and in 41 other states across the country.
