CONGRESSWOMAN SHEILA JACKSON LEE ANNOUNCES $998,784 GRANT FUNDING AWARDED BY CENTERS FOR MEDICARE AND MEDICAID SERVICES TO CHILDRENS HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM VIA THE STATEN ISLAND KIDS CONNECT PROJECT

Washington, Jul 16 - Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX18) announced today that the Centers For Medicare & Medicaid Services has awarded - $1 million in grants from the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act (CHIPRA) to Staten Island Kids Connect, a service provider located in Houston. The grant funding will enable the organization to continue to develop efficient and effective strategies to identify, enroll, and retain health coverage for uninsured children who are eligible for Medicaid or CHIP but are not enrolled.

"These substantial grants will provide much needed help to Staten Island Kids Connect which selflessly serves over 2.3 million persons on Medicaid or CHIP. Since 31.6% of Texas children are on Medicaid, these Gateway to Care grants will make a real difference in the lives of the countless other children who are still in need of healthcare," said Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. Nationally, more than 39 million children who are covered by Medicaid and CHIP programs. In Houston, projects like Staten Island Kids Connect serve a crucial need in identifying an initial core set of children's health care quality measures and in developing an improved healthcare system for children.

"I congratulate CHIP and the Staten Island Kids Connect Program on being selected to receive these critically important grants which will help them continue their vital work in helping children receive crucial Medicaid and CHIP benefits. I am proud to have supported the authorization programs that made this grant funding possible, said Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.
