CEI Statement on Resignation of NAIC CEO Catherine Weatherford
Washington, D.C., July 3, 2008—Long-serving National Association of Insurance Commissioners Executive Vice President and CEO Catherine Weatherford announced her resignation Thursday.
CEI Senior fellow and insurance project lead Eli Lehrer both praises and criticizes Weatherford’s tenure with the organization. “By all appearances, she did an effective job administering NAIC and expanding its presence in the public policy debate. Unfortunately, she ended up using a lot of that influence to fight free market reform,” Lehrer said. “Her steadfast opposition to engage the debate about possible gains from competitive chartering concepts, such as an Optional Federal Charter, showed that NAIC’s supposed commitment to regulatory modernization was nothing more than a mirage.”
