Hall named to KSU Hall of Fame

SMITHVILLE -- Former Smithville resident Dr. John E. Hall will be inducted into Kent State University Hall of Fame on Oct. 4, as a distinguished alumni of the College of Education, Health & Human Service.

The award is the highest bestowed upon a former student that graduated within the last 50 years from a program within the college.

Hall graduated from Kent State University in 1968, and then served two years in the United States Army. After being honorably discharged, he attended Michigan State University where he earned a doctorate in physiology in 1974.

From 1974 to the present, Hall has been associated with the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, Miss. He serves as associate vice chancellor for research as well as director of the Mississippi Center for Obesity Research. Since 1989, he has been chairman of the physiology and biophysics departments.

Hall's major research interests include cardiovascular and renal physiology, mechanisms of hypertension, obesity and metabolic disorders.

As a nationally and internationally recognized physiologist, Hall is the recipient of several national and international awards. He recently was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Romania, Bucharest Romania; awarded the International Society of Hypertension Franz Volhard Award and Lectureship for Outstanding Research, Sydney Australia; the Excellence Award of the Mississippi Technology Alliance; and inducted into the Mississippi Innovators Hall of Fame.

Hall has authored and co-authored 18 books and more than 530 publications. Among the books is the Textbook of Medical Physiology 12th edition, which is the world's leading medical textbook on physiology.

Hall resides in Jackson, Miss., but continues to maintain an attachment to Smithville, where his mother, Ruby Hall, resides. He graduated from Smithville High School, where he was active as a varsity athlete in all major sports and was editor of the yearbook.

Gesler celebrates 30th anniversary

WOOSTER -- Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Center celebrated the 30- year anniversary of orthopaedic surgeon Dr. James W. Gesler recently.

Gesler received his bachelor of arts degree from DePauw University and his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He completed his internship in general surgery in 1977 at Emory University in Atlanta and his orthopaedic residency in 1981 at CWRU and affiliated hospitals in Cleveland.

He was lieutenant commander in the U.S. Public Health Service in Anchorage, Alaska, where he served as staff orthopaedic surgeon for two years. In 1983, he moved back to Ohio to join Dr. Owen Logee in practice.

Gesler is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He serves as the medical director at Wooster Ambulatory Surgery Center and has been team physician for Northwestern since 1983.

He and his wife, Lana, have three adult children and reside in Wooster.

Redman elected to national board

WOOSTER -- Dr. Roger Redman, owner of Ark Veterinary Hospital, was elected to the American Association of Veterinary State Board's Board of Directors at the annual conference in Kansas City, Mo., on Sept. 19-21.

Redman also serves on the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board, appointed by the governor in 2006.

The AAVSB is an association of regulatory boards. Membership includes 58 veterinary licensing boards encompassing all of the United States, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and five Canadian provinces. The AAVSB provides resources and information for veterinary regulatory agencies in the interest of public protection.

Marlar joins Meaden & Moore

WOOSTER -- Susan Marlar has joined the regional accounting and business consulting firm of Meaden & Moore as a director with the firm's Tax Services Group in the Wooster office.

Before joining Meaden & Moore, Marlar worked for accounting firms in <location value="LU/us.tx.dallas" idsrc="xmltag.org">Dallas, New York and Charlotte, N.C., in the tax and personal financial planning area.

She continued her career as a partner with a local firm in Charlotte providing tax and accounting services to closely-held businesses and individuals, Internal Revenue Service audit representation, estate planning and compliance.

Marlar graduated from Baylor University with a master's degree in tax, is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She is active in the community serving on the Wooster City Schools Board of Education, Wooster City Schools Business Advisory Communication Committee, Youth Entrepreneurship Committee, Financial Planning Committee and College Hills Retirement Village.

She is the co-chairwoman of the Wooster Rotary Parade of Flags Program.
