BRIEF: United Guaranty lays off Greensboro workers [News & Record, Greensboro, N.C.]

Jan. 18--GREENSBORO -- Mortgage insurance company United Guaranty Corp. has laid off some local employees.

The company employs about 500 people at its downtown Greensboro headquarters and 900 nationwide. A company spokesperson today declined to say how many people were affected or what percentage of the workforce was let go.

"United Guaranty closely monitors staffing levels to match business needs. On Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2013, we underwent a reduction in force of a small percentage of our employee population in the Piedmont area," a company spokesman said in a statement to The Business Journal, which reported the layoffs on its website.

United Guaranty laid off 160 employees in 2009 after it lost $2.5 billion in 2008 when the nation's housing market crashed. But it later rehired 100 of those workers.

United Guaranty is a subsidiary of American International Group, a multinational insurance company based in New York.
