BRIEF: Couple charged with failing to return bond money [Erie Times-News, Pa.]

Jan. 29--An Elk Creek Township couple has been charged with stealing $22,500 from an Illinois woman while they were working as agents for a bail bonds company.

Charges of theft by unlawful taking, criminal conspiracy to commit theft by unlawful taking and insurance fraud were filed this morning against David Wasmund, 48, and Michelle Wasmund, 44, both of the 9300 block of Ivarea Road. Erie police Lt. Dan Spizarny accuses the Wasmunds of collecting $25,000 in cash from a woman to bail out another person, but failing to return $22,500 of the money that was held as collateral, in September 2011, while the Wasmunds worked as agents for Cutting Edge Bail Bonds. The person who was bonded completed his required court appearances in October, but the cash collateral was never returned, according to the criminal complaint filed in the case.

Spizarny said he also learned during his investigation that the Wasmunds did not complete an insurance company's receipt for collateral, as required, according to the complaint.

David and Michelle Wasmund were arraigned on the charges late this morning by Erie 3rd Ward District Judge Tom Carney. They were released on $25,000 unsecured bond.
