Area Roundup: West Valley girls take team title at track, field meet in Oroville

April 27--The West Valley girls track and field team finished first Friday at the West Valley Invitational at Harrison Stadium in Oroville.

The Eagles team collected 70 points out of the 24 teams that scored.

On the boys side, the Chico team was first and Enterprise came in second.

West Valley's Jenna Hinkle was first in the girls 800 (2 minutes, 20.83 seconds). Teammates Jenna Storms was first in the 3,200 (11:26.43) and Kristina Freitas was first in the 300 hurdles (45.89 seconds). Anderson's Melissa Frields was first in the 100-meter hurdles (16.62). Enterprise's Chantelle Borges was first in the triple jump (32 feet, 1 inch).

For the boys, Red Bluff's 1,600-relay team was first (3:32.66) with Jordan Johnson, Austin Torres, Michael Stone and KJ Hinkston. West Valley's Aron Whisenhunt was first in the pole vault (12-0). Shasta's Zane Ventimiglia took first in the shot put (51-9 1/2 ) while Anderson's Chris Delaney was tops in the discus (165-2).

Redding Christian 10, Hayfork 2

The Lions picked up a win Friday on the road.

Redding Christian's Cassie Reeder was the winning pitcher with nine strikeouts. Amy Marsh was 2 for 4 with a double, Carlie Paradis was 2 for 3 with a double, and Reilly Rupert and Tatum Piper were each 2 for 4.

Hayfork's Dante Bertain hit a home run.

Redding Christian goes to Chester on Tuesday.

Wampler helps host basketball training

Tabytha Wampler, a former West Valley High and New Mexico State basketball player, is joining with Kevin Crye's Upper Hand Athletics to host a 10-week basketball training program for girls and women ages 13-18. An informational meeting is set for 6 p.m. Sunday at EveryDay Fitness on Athens Avenue in Redding. Athletes and parents are asked to attend. For more information, call 524-0005.

River Cats vouchers aid U-Prep baseball

The University Preparatory School baseball program is selling Sacramento River Cats ticket vouchers as a fundraiser.

Vouchers cost $20 and are good for any regular season home game for the 2014 season. Tickets are good for the Senate seat section behind first and third dugout sections. All proceeds support the Panther Baseball program.

Anderson Aquagators accepting sign-ups

Sign-ups for the Anderson Aquagators competitive swim team will be Thursday, between 5-7 p.m. at West Valley High School.

The cost is $110 for swimmers ages 5 through 8 (plus $46 for insurance), and $150 for swimmers 9-18 years old (plus $46 for insurance).

Practices are offered but swimmers are not required to attend all of them. Practices are at West Valley High School, 5:30-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday from May 5 to June 5, then weekday mornings from 7:45-9:30 a.m. and Monday through Thursday evenings from 6:15-8 p.m. from June 9-Aug. 1.

Golf tourney to benefit CV athletics

Central Valley High School will have a golf fundraiser for its athletic department May 17 at Gold Hills Golf Club.

The cost is $100 per player or $400 per team and includes green fees, cart, range balls and dinner.

Enterprise offers sports camps

Enterprise High School is offering summer camps for boys basketball, football for incoming freshmen, girls basketball and volleyball.

Boys basketball is for fourth- through eighth-graders from 8 a.m. to noonJune 9-13. For ninth- through 12th-graders, the time is 2-5 p.m. Cost is $75.

Football for incoming freshmen runs from 8 a.m. to noonJune 16-20 and costs $50.

The girls basketball camp is from 9 a.m. to noonJune 16-20 for fourth- through eighth-graders, and from 12:30-3:30 p.m. for ninth- through 12th-graders and costs $60.

Volleyball is for fourth- through 12th-graders from 2-5 p.m.Aug. 4-7 and costs $50.

Sign-up forms are online at the Enterprise High School website or you can sign up the day of at the door.
