Alle-Kiski roundup: Burrell opens season with extras win

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
By The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

March 25--With meaningful field time still difficult to come by due to poor weather, Burrell's baseball team gave itself a few extra innings of work when it squared off with Highlands in its season opener Monday afternoon.

Ryan Sowol and Justin Fleck delivered doubles to key a four-run top of the 10th inning that lifted the Bucs past Highlands, 6-2, in a nonsection contest.

Leading 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Burrell (1-0) left the door open with a couple of fielding miscues. The Golden Rams (0-1) capitalized after Cory Rezak reached on an error to bring home R.J. Arner and extend the game.

Highlands, which finished with three hits, nearly won the game in the ninth but had a runner thrown out at the plate.

Sowol was the second batter of the 10th inning, and his double brought home the go-ahead run. Fleck provided insurance with a two-RBI double that paved the way for Dustin Maloney to pick up the pitching win in relief.

Riverview 10, Fo rd City 3 -- Nick DiBucci pitched six strong innings and went 3 for 4 with a double and three runs scored to pace the Raiders (2-0) in a nonsection victory over the Sabers (0-1). Dom Conte led the offensive attack with three hits, including a double, triple and three RBIs.

Zack Hanus doubled twice, and Jake Paradise had a double for Riverview, and Blake Bower and Zeke Walker each doubled for Ford City.

Deer Lakes 14, Co rnell 0 (5 in n.) -- The Lancers held the Raiders to one hit in their season opener.

John Carnprobst and Ryan Petrone each doubled, singled and drove in three runs, and Scotty Ventura doubled, singled and had two RBIs.

Jimmy Fiel and Zach Lubick also belted extra-base hits for Deer Lakes (1-0), and Dom Chiera earned the win on the mound. Derrik Dillard produced Cornell's lone hit.

Boys tennis

Plum 5, Gateway 0 -- Carson France, Plum's No. 1 singles player, won in straight sets to lead the Mustangs in a Section 3-AAA victory.

Jeremy Kurcina and Nick Palmer rolled to a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win in second doubles.

Valley 5, Highlands 0 -- Cody Schrecongost and Josh Denham rolled to straight-set wins in first and third singles for Valley in the Section 4-AA match.

Track and field

Riverview strong in season opener -- Will Gonsowski delivered wins in the 1,600-meter race and the 3,200 and contributed to Riverview's first-place finish in the 3,200 relay during a 96-52 nonsection meet victory for the Raiders over Trinity Christian.

Andrew Zengraf, another member of the 3,200 relay, won the 800.

During the girls' 109.5-33.5 win over Trinity Christian, Nikki Polens took first in the 400 and the long jump, and Lauren Ault won the shot put and discus throws.
