A.M. Best Analyst: Future of Thunderstorm-Only Cat Bonds Is Cloudy

The first catastrophe bonds issued to cover severe thunderstorms alone have been triggered, resulting in total losses for investors and clouding the future of similar transactions in the future, said

If another severe thunderstorm-only cat bond comes to the market, investors may expect a higher return due to the higher perceived risk, Attoh-Okine said.
A more likely scenario might be the next time severe thunderstorm risk is covered by a cat bond, the bond would also include other perils.
"This outcome tells you it is not a free ride," Attoh-Okine said.

Modeling severe thunderstorm losses can be tricky, due to lack of formal reporting in the early 1970s and changes in population dynamics, Attoh-Okine said. Severe thunderstorm risks include risks of tornadoes, windstorms and hailstorms.
