4 flee Sharon house fire safely; cause still unknown

Oct. 6--SHARON -- Four residents escaped unharmed early Monday from a house fire at 449 North St.

Sharon fire Chief Bob Fiscus said firefighters responded at 3:06 a.m. and found heavy fire coming from the third-floor attic area.

Shortly after firefighters arrived, the building's roof collapsed.

"It was burning for some time before we were dispatched," Fiscus said, "which made it kind of challenging, because the fire was between the collapsed roof and the floor."

The house was occupied by two adults and two children ages 9 and 11, Fiscus said, adding that everyone got out of the house safely.

Fiscus could not say what started the fire. The blaze began in the attic, he said, and the home had no electric service.

A state police fire marshal is investigating the fire. The cause is undetermined at this time.

The house is owned by Monica Ross, who was not one of the occupants. Fiscus said he did not know if she had insurance on it.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family.

Sharon Fire Department was assisted by firefighters from Farrell, Hermitage, Brookfield and Sharpsville and by McGonigle Ambulance.
