May 16, 1919

Charles Klein, well-known local orchardist, stated to a Post reporter yesterday that the recent cold weather will reduce the cherry crop more than half. He said the supply will provide for the demand in the city, but there will be very few if any he thought for shipment. Other years, tons of cherries are shipped from this county to Baltimore, Washington and other cities. He added that peaches have been damaged but not to any serious extent.

Frederick county school children, eleven thousand of them, will be in the public eye today. It is the occasion of the third annual school demonstration and with clear skies the celebration will assume giant proportions.

Hail fell during a thunderstorm at Thurmont yesterday afternoon. No damage, however, was reported. A heavy rain passed over Creagerstown and Lewistown. In this city, the rain amounted to nothing more than a shower.

May 16, 1969

A newspaper is now being issued by the Frederick County Community Action Committee (CAC). It is entitled the "Community Voice." The first issue was released last week. The paper is dedicated to be a "voice" for the indigent in the county serving as a spokesman for their plight.

Joe passed up the security of a family insurance business in Baltimore to become a professional angler at a time when just making grocery money as a full-time fisherman was an uphill hike all the way. Today he's the best known and most experienced fisherman in the land -- the dean of American anglers -- a reputation earned in more than 30 years of pioneering, exploring and teaching others the fishing secrets he's discovered.
