Turning awareness into action during Life Insurance Awareness Month

By David Levenson

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month — a fitting time to reflect on the progress our industry has made in reaching consumers about their life insurance needs and the work that still lies ahead.

For more than 15 years, LIMRA’s Insurance Barometer Study has tracked how Americans think about life insurance. This year’s findings are encouraging in several respects. Consumers continue to recognize the importance of financial protection, and the overall need gap has begun to narrow from the historic highs we saw during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yet millions of Americans still acknowledge they need coverage they don’t have. The challenge before us is no longer simply creating awareness; it’s helping consumers take the next step. The good news is that this year’s research provides valuable insight into how we can do that.

Consumer expectations continue to evolve

Today’s life insurance shopper follows a much different path than even a few years ago. Consumers increasingly begin their journey online, using search engines, social media, videos and artificial intelligence-powered tools to educate themselves before ever speaking with a financial professional. In fact, YouTube has surpassed Facebook as the leading social platform consumers use when researching financial products.

At the same time, consumers haven’t abandoned the value of personal advice.

More than half say they still prefer speaking directly with a financial professional — whether in person, by phone or via video — when making important insurance decisions. Nearly half already work with a financial professional, while another one-quarter are actively looking for one.

This tells us something important. Consumers don’t view digital tools and professional guidance as competing experiences. They expect them to work together.

For insurers, that means continuing to invest in digital capabilities that educate, simplify and engage while ensuring consumers can easily transition to trusted human advice when they’re ready.

Education remains our greatest opportunity

One of the most persistent findings in the Barometer Study remains one of the industry’s greatest opportunities.

Many consumers continue to overestimate the cost of life insurance — often by four to six times its actual cost for younger adults. Even more concerning, many acknowledge their estimates are based on little more than a “wild guess.” Others say they don’t know how much coverage they need or what type of policy is right for them. These misconceptions and lack of understanding have real consequences. Consumers who believe coverage is unaffordable are unlikely to begin the buying process, regardless of their actual financial circumstances.

The solution isn’t simply more advertising. It’s better education delivered at the moments consumers are most receptive — through financial professionals, employers, digital channels and trusted educational resources. Every interaction that improves understanding helps build confidence and moves consumers closer to protecting their families.

Looking ahead

The Barometer Study also suggests that younger consumers are increasingly open to new purchasing experiences, including embedded insurance opportunities and policies that offer greater flexibility as life circumstances change. Those findings reinforce that innovation extends beyond product design to the entire customer experience.

As our industry continues to modernize distribution, we should remain focused on one fundamental objective: making it easier for consumers to understand, purchase and maintain the protection they need.

Life Insurance Awareness Month reminds us why this work matters. Every policy represents more than a financial product — it represents security for a family, confidence for the future and peace of mind during life’s most difficult moments.

The opportunity before us is significant. By combining innovative technology with trusted professional guidance and a renewed commitment to consumer education, our industry can help more Americans move beyond recognizing the importance of life insurance to taking action.

That is how we’ll continue to narrow the protection gap — and to fulfill our industry’s mission of helping families achieve financial security.
