10 Ways Martha McSally Would Attack the Middle Class DAY EIGHT: McSally Would Raise Taxes on Middle Class Families

Targeted News Service

TUCSON, Ariz., Aug. 18 -- The campaign of U.S. Rep. Ron Barber, a Democrat running for re-election in Arizona's2nd Congressional District, issued the following campaign news:

Southern Arizonans are still struggling to recover from the worst economic crisis in a generation. Despite these tough times, Martha McSally wants to increase taxes on Southern Arizona families by almost $1,400 a year.

That's not a typo. Martha McSally believes middle class families should pay more in taxes so that rich people can pay less.

"Martha McSally said that she would raise taxes on middle class families by almost $1,400 a year so that rich people could get a tax break of more than $200,000," said Ashley Nash-Hahn, spokeswoman for Ron Barber for Congress. "McSally's plan to balance the budget on the backs of Southern Arizona's middle class is not a surprise. McSally has taken $5,000 in campaign contributions from Paul Ryan, and if she goes to Washington, she'll do exactly what he tells her to do."

In case you missed it, here is one, two, three, four, five, six and seven on McSally's anti-middle class agenda.

Background

Martha McSally said she would have voted for a budget that would raise taxes on middle class families--so that the rich can get a tax break of more than $200,000 a year.

In April 2012, McSally said that she would have voted for the FY 2013 Paul Ryan Budget:

"There were several budgets actually that were tied up last week to the House and the one that did pass is the one that Paul Ryan had created and I would have voted for that budget," she said. [KGUN 9 News, 4/09/12]

According to the Joint Economic Committee, the Ryan Budget would "increase the tax burden facing middle-class workers: a household making between $50,000 and $100,000 would face a tax increase of at least $1,358." The Ryan Budget would get rid of tax benefits to the middle class, including deductions for mortgage interest, state and local taxes, and charitable contributions, as well as tax exclusions for employer-sponsored health insurance and contributions to 401(k) plans. [Joint Economic Committee, 6/20/12]

Under the Ryan Budget, millionaires would see an average tax cut of $265,000 before Bush tax cuts kicked in. According to an analysis by the Tax Policy Center, "those making $1 million or more would enjoy an average tax cut of $265,000 and see their after-tax income increase by 12.5 percent." [Tax Policy Center, 3/23/12]

The Ryan Budget cut top marginal income tax rate by 10 Percent. Under the House Republican budget, the top marginal income tax rate - scheduled to rise in 2013 to 39.6 percent - would instead be cut to 25 percent. [cbpp.org, 3/22/12]

The Ryan Budget extended President Bush's tax cuts, resulting in a $129,000 tax cut for millionaires. Consequently, millionaires would see an average tax cut of $394,000. [cbpp.org, 4/12/12]
