Woman who collided with three vehicles pleads not guilty

July 20--Two assault cases were set for trial in Madison Circuit Court last Thursday.

Police say Susan E. Riley caused three collisions the same night while under the influence, causing major injuries in the third accident. But Riley, 32, of Berea Road in Richmond, pleaded not guilty to the charges on Thursday.

Riley was arrested on the charges in February on a Madison County warrant.

According to the warrant, Riley caused the collisions on Dec. 12, 2016, first causing a two-car wreck on Lexington Road at the southbound entrance to Interstate 75 that resulted in no injuries but did cause minor damage to the victim's vehicle.

Riley then allegedly pulled into oncoming traffic and hit another vehicle, once again causing damage to the other car but no injuries. The third time the victims weren't so lucky, according to the warrant. After Riley once again fled, heading northwest on Lexington Road, she is accused of colliding with a Nissan pickup truck. The driver and passenger of the Nissan were severely injured.

The warrant noted Riley was unresponsive when emergency responders arrived, and Narcan was used on her.

Riley faces two counts of first-degree assault, three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, two counts first-degree criminal mischief, one count second-degree criminal mischief, two counts of leaving the scene of an accident, one count of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs/alcohol and failure to maintain required insurance.

Her trial has been scheduled to begin Oct. 2 at 10 a.m. in Madison Circuit Court.

A man accused of committing assault while in custody at the Madison County Detention Center has been scheduled for trial on that charge, and has been sentenced on drug charges.

Jason D. Marcum, 30, of Floyd Branch Road in Berea, faces a charge of second-degree assault in the alleged March 31 incident. The charge is a Class C felony that can be punished by five to 10 years in prison.

Marcum was sentenced to two years on a charge of first-degree drug trafficking, and to 90 days for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Marcum's trial on the assault charge is scheduled to begin Dec. 4 at 9 a.m. in Madison Circuit Court.
