Williamsburg Landing named Chamber’s Health Promoter of the Year

Virginia Gazette (Williamsburg)

Williamsburg Landing was named the Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance's 2019 Health Promoter of the Year, according to a recent Chamber newsletter.

The annual award recognizes individuals, civic groups or businesses that promote healthy lifestyles and wellbeing in the community. Past winners include Iron-Bound Gym and York County-based contractor Henderson Inc., according to past Virginia Gazette reports.

Williamsburg Landing was nominated for the award by Audrey Smith, executive director of Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg, Williamsburg Landing President and CEO Greg Storer said.

"I think it's a tremendous honor, not just for the organization, but all of our residents who live here and our teammates who work here with us," Storer said when asked what the award means for Williamsburg Landing. "I think it's great when the Chamber recognizes one of its members for continuing to improve the lives of people that live and work with them."

The continuing care retirement community provides its residents with a number of amenities and independent living options as well as on-site healthcare service, and Storer said resources that it offers for residents and employees help it to stand out. These include its William A. Doig Health Club and Spa, which features a cardio and fitness room, a 20-meter heated pool and hot tub, spa and group exercise studio. The Landing also offers a Healthy Balance incentive program, which encourages employees to eat healthy and exercise by offering discounts on health insurance.

"We encourage our residents to live and thrive where they would like to live and thrive and to continue to provide resources to them to afford them the opportunity to do that," Storer said. "It's important for us to take care of our employees, they're our number one resource in taking care of our residents, so we want them to have a very balanced life."

Virginia Beer Co, William and Mary Business School to host event for aspiring entrepreneurs

Stop by the Virginia Beer Company on Sept. 17 for Crafting a Business, a new ongoing event series presented by William and Mary's Raymond A. Mason School of Business.

The inaugural event will be held at the York County-based brewery, and will feature a moderated discussion and Q&A session with Virginia Beer Company owners Robby Willey and Chris Smith.

"The idea behind it is that it's showcasing two different community organizations, and hopefully, using this first event as a platform to just talk about our relationships and connections and all the ways that you can go about pursuing your own dream, whether it's starting a business, going back to school, or working for a big company or a small company," Willey said.

As alums of the college, the two brewery co-owners are excited to offer a platform to spread awareness about the business school, Willey said.

"It's kind of surreal, to be honest," he said. "It's a very fascinating to be at a point right now, we're three years in as a business owner and a member of the community, that we can hopefully do something positive for our alma mater."

The first Crafting A Business event will be held at the Virginia Beer Company (401 Second St.) on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. The event is free. To register, visit: craftingabusinessinfo.wordpress.com.
