Warrensburg approves status-quo budget

Nov. 24--WARRENSBURG -- One position is being cut through retirement in a mostly status-quo $2.78 million budget for the town of Warrensburg.

Total spending for the general and highway funds is increasing by $22,111, or 0.80 percent, from the current year. The amount to be collected in taxes for those two funds is increasing by nearly $11,000, to $1.22 million.

Supervisor Kevin Geraghty said the town is under the tax cap.

Town officials are not replacing one employee who is retiring in the Parks and Recreation Department. The town may backfill that position with a part-timer or go with seasonal employees, Geraghty said.

That is about the only major change, according to Geraghty.

Like every other community, the town is facing higher health insurance costs. That line item for the general and highway funds increased in the budget by about $15,000, to 345,000.

"We're able to keep it in check," he said.

Major sources of projected revenue in the budget include $755,000 from sales tax, $135,000 from refuse and garage fees, $113,000 in state highway aid, $80,000 from other fees, $77,000 in fines, $60,000 from mortgage tax, $45,000 from occupancy tax, $23,000 in other state aid and about $183,000 in miscellaneous revenue.

The town is tapping $161,000 from the general and highway fund balance.

"We were fortunate. We're not using much fund balance. We're pretty happy," he said.

The town tax rate is increasing by about 3 cents, from $3.585 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, to $3.611. The lighting district tax rate is increasing by 1 cent, from 0.337 to 0.347. The fire district rate is increasing from $0.917 to $0.9389.

The sewer and water rates will remain the same, according to Geraghty.

"We're holding the line," he said.
