Utica National Foundation awards $25K to House of the Good Shepherd. Where it will be used

The Utica National Group Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Utica National Insurance Group, has awarded $25,000 to The House of the Good Shepherd (HGS) in Utica to fund an insulation project at the Milton Abelove Children's Center (MACS) on its Champlin Road campus.

The MACS Building experienced significant water damage Jan. 16 due to frozen pipes bursting in the ceiling. To ensure this unfortunate situation did not occur again, HGS needed to insulate the space between the roofline and the ceiling. When the Utica National Group Foundation heard about the damage and need, they approved a $25,000 grant to cover a substantial portion of the project, which will be completed later this summer.

"The ability of The House of the Good Shepherd to carry out their excellent work for children in need was negatively impacted by the bursting pipes this past winter - our funding to help defray the costs of the necessary insulation improvements will prevent this problem from happening in the future," said Bernard Turi, chair of the Foundation's Screening Committee and Utica National's executive vice president, general counsel, general auditor and chief risk officer. "We are pleased that our foundation's grant has enabled the House to make these necessary upgrades so their focus can remain on providing treatment, education and support services to the children and families in need."

The MACS building houses 12 youths in the Raise the Age and Non-Secure Detention programs. These HGS programs provide practical and therapeutic interventions to help address criminogenic behavior, heal family bonds and challenge perceptions of current situations and future outcomes. These young people will continue on their path to success even after they leave the program with a newly formed focus on their purpose.

"They understood this adverse event's impact on our kids that had to relocate to another building while the MACS building was under repair. The generous support from the Utica National Group Foundation ensures this type of situation won't happen again and we are grateful."

In 2016, Mike joined SUNY Polytechnic Institute and most recently served as chief operating officer since 2017. During that time, he was responsible for the overall development and coordination of fiscal and organizational strategy throughout a period of significant transformation at the institution. He was also instrumental in developing and expanding multiple external relationships that enhanced the research and academic mission of SUNY Poly. Frame has served as director of Federal Relations for Florida State University, the State University of New York and Binghamton University. Prior to that, he worked for the former Metropolitan Development Association of Central New York in Syracuse. Frame graduated from Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs with a Master of Public Administration and from Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations with a Bachelor of Science.

Courtney Iles has been promoted to director of Client Strategy for the growing Personal Risk division at Gilroy Kernan & Gilroy Inc. (GKG) of New Hartford. In the role, she will lead the development and implementation of personal risk solutions for individuals across New York State and increasingly around the nation. Iles has been a valued member of the GKG team since 2015. She brings a decade of industry experience and holds various designations including Chartered Private Risk and Insurance Advisor; Certified Personal Risk Manager; Accredited Adviser in Insurance; and Personal Lines Coverage Specialist Designation. Iles resides in Sherrill with her family.

Angela Johnson DeCarlis, a local artist and businesswoman, was elected president of the Board of Directors of the non-profit Utica Monday Nite For the Arts (UMN). She will serve a three-year term. DeCarlis is a well-known and highly respected painter and accomplished muralist who has been active in the local arts community for many years. An accredited life coach and consultant, she is the owner of Be. Life, Art, Magic in Utica. She holds degrees in Fine Arts, Business Management and Business Administration.

The UMN Board of Directors also announced the addition of two new members: Michelle Klosek, owner of several Varick Street clubs and arts and entertainment venues and Jennifer Quinn, a marketing executive with Galaxy Communications. Both will serve two-year terms. The board also voted to extend by one year the terms of officers Vice President Alejandro Gonzalez, Treasurer Amy Creedon, and Secretary Richard Barrett, all of whom have served two-year terms. Former President Alyssa Spina continues to serve on the board, along with Founder and Honorary Member Lynne Mishelanie.

As part of its 25 year anniversary celebration, UMN For the Arts, in partnership with MVCC and ThINCubator, will launch an intensive eight-week Artist Refinery Program beginning May 25. The organization received a grant from Key Bank to fund part of the program. Additionally, The Levitt AMP Utica summer concert series, of which UMNFTA is a sponsor, begins June 20 at Kopernick Park.

Ross Berntson, Indium Corporation's president and chief operating officer, was inducted by the Manufacturers Association of Central New York (MACNY) into its Manufacturers Wall of Fame during the organization's 109th annual Celebration of Manufacturing May 12 at the SRC Arena and Events Center in Syracuse. The Manufacturers Wall of Fame, MACNY's highest honor, is bestowed upon a chief executive or top local officer of a successful manufacturing firm who contributes to the economic well-being of his or her company and the overall region. At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Berntson and MACNY were instrumental in establishing the manufacturing pledge which established policies and procedures to keep employees safe while maintaining the operation of essential manufacturing facilities. Berntson is an alumnus of Cornell University where he earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and master's degrees in business administration and education while also earning the Henny Wittink Memorial Marketing Prize and the George C Caldwell Prize.

Stewart's Shops plans to open its district office in Utica, which will bring 12 new jobs to the city. The company is no stranger to Utica, with two shops in the city and several in surrounding areas. In 2022, Stewart's Shops is committed to giving $8 million to nonprofits across its market areas.
