Two injured after chase, head-on collision on Highway 52

Dispatch, The (Lexington, NC)

April 16-- Apr. 16--Two people were transported to the hospital, one via AirCare, Monday night after a law enforcement chase ended with a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 52.

Antoine Devon Mickle, 27, of Winston-Salem, was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was charged with careless and reckless driving, driving the wrong way on a dual lane highway, driving with a license revoked and driving without insurance.

Matthew Christopher Blyden, 33, of Lexington, was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem via EMS.

According to Trooper Ned Moultrie, the accident occurred at 10:20 p.m. Monday night on the northbound side of U.S. Highway 52 just south of mile marker 94.

Moultrie said a deputy with the Davidson County Sheriff's Office was chasing Mickle as he was driving a 2015 Chevrolet south in the northbound lanes of the highway. Mickle collided head-on with Blyden's 2005 Saab, ending the chase. The deputy's vehicle was not involved in the collision.

Both Mickle and Blyden received serious injuries and their cars were severely damaged.

A press release from the Davidson County Sheriff's Office indicated that the chase began after deputies noticed a revoked registration plate on Mickle's vehicle then saw him drive through a driveway and yard at a high rate of speed. After the wreck, Mickle was found in possession of over $2,000 worth of goods believed to be stolen. The items still had anti-theft devices attached, the release said.

The Sheriff's Office is pursuing additional charges of fleeing to elude arrest, stop sign violations, failure to heed to blue lights and sirens, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, displaying a revoked registration plate and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The northbound side of the highway was shut down after the wreck to allow for AirCare landing and clean up. The road reopened at 12:05 a.m., Moultrie said.

Trooper B. Deel led the investigation.
