Top 10 world’s wealthiest pets — we’re not talking chicken feed

Contra Costa Times (Walnut Creek, CA)

Oct. 26--Disappointed that you didn't become a billionaire, or even a millionaire, in recent lottery madness? This isn't likely to make you feel any better.

ComparetheMarket.com, a UK company that provides cost comparisons for pet and other insurance policies, has compiled a list of the 35 richest pets. They range from animals that have inherited millions to those who have earned their riches, mostly through social media.

Here are the top 10:

Guther IV

Net worth: $375 million

This German shepherd inherited his vast fortune from his father, Gunther III, who in turn inherited it from German countess Karlotta Leibenstein. Guther IV, whose age is unknown, has his own personal maid and butler, eats steak and caviar, and owns multiple million-dollar homes, giving new meaning to the phrase "It's a dog's life."

Grumpy Cat

Estimated net worth: $99.5 million

With all that cash, it's doubtful Grumpy Cat is all that disgruntled. The cat with a dour expression became instantly famous in 2012, when a photo of her went viral on social media, spawning memes, parodies, books, merchandise and even a movie, "Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever." Grumpy, whose real name is Tardar Sauce, is 6 years old and owned by Tabatha Bundesen, who come to mention it, probably isn't very grumpy either.

Olivia Benson

Estimated net worth: $97 million

Olivia, 4, is one of two cats owned by Taylor Swift. Olivia, named after Swift's favorite "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" character, is a Scottish fold and has earned fame outside of being a Swift cat. Olivia has been in commercials for Diet Coke and Keds shoes. She also has a big following on Instagram.

Sadie, Sunny, Lauren, Layla and Luke

Estimated net worth: $30 million

Golden retrievers Luke and Layla, cocker spaniel Sadie, and springer spaniels Sunny and Lauren belong to Oprah Winfrey, who has bequeathed $30 million in her will to the care of the dogs. Isn't being owned by Winfrey enough?

Gigoo

Estimated net worth: $15 million

Gigoo is one lucky duck, er, chicken. She inherited her money from British multi-millionaire publisher Miles Blackwell. The rare Scots dumpy hen was a beloved pet of Blackwell and his wife, who died just three weeks before her husband. The couple had no children and while Blackwell left a rather large nest egg for Gigoo, the majority of his estate was put in trust to benefit arts, music and animal welfare causes, including the preservation of rare breeds.

Tommassino

Estimated net worth: $13 million

Tommassino was the much-loved cat of wealthy Italian Maria Assunta. When Assunta died in 2011, she left her entire estate, including homes and villas throughout Italy, to Tommassino. Her attorney says wealth hasn't changed Tommassino. "To be honest," the lawyer said, "he doesn't really need all that money. He is happy with a saucer of milk and some biscuits."

Blackie

Estimated net worth: $12.5 million

Blackie the cat is another trust fund kitty, at one time listed by Guinness World Records as the world's wealthiest cat. He was the last of 15 cats owned by multi-millionaire Ben Rea, inheriting a sizable chunk of catnip.

Conchita

Estimated net worth: $11.3 million

Conchita inherited her wealth from socialite Gail Posner, who left most of her fortune to Conchita, a Chihuahua, and other pets. Conchita lives a life of luxury, enjoying weekly spa treatments and wearing $10,000 Cartier necklaces.

Boo

Estimated net worth: $8 million

In a world of trust fund pets, Boo the Pomeranian is a self-made dog, earning his fortune by playing off his extreme good looks. Boo, 12, has a merchandise empire that includes a stuffed version of himself and his own book. On social media, he's known as the the world's cutest dog. He is managed by his owner, Irene Ahn.

Bart the Bear 2

Estimated net worth: $6 million
