Superior Court Judge Grants Petition to Coordinate Southern California Fire Cases and Recommends Los Angeles County Superior Court

Petition led by California Fire Lawyers will expedite resolution for victims of Thomas and Rye Fires

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Today, the California Fire Lawyers, including the firms of Baron & Budd, the Singleton Law Firm, Dixon Diab & Chambers LLP, Thorsnes Bartolotta McGuire, and Terry Singleton, ESQ., announced that on Monday, April 16, Ventura County Superior Court Judge Vincent J. O’Neill, Jr. granted a petition to coordinate all Southern California Fire-related litigation brought against Southern California Edison. Judge O’Neill ruled in favor of coordinating the litigation in one location – Los Angeles Superior Court – citing convenience of the location for all parties involved, as well as Los Angeles County’s designated complex litigation department and the County’s ability to handle the volume of the fire-related cases.

The decision to coordinate the Southern California Fire litigation supports an initial filing by the California Fire Lawyers on January 10, 2018, which petitioned the Judicial Council of California for a Judicial Council Coordinated Proceeding (“JCCP”) to coordinate all cases against Southern California Edison arising from the 2017 Thomas and Rye Fires. By using a JCCP to hear the cases, one judge will oversee all pre-trial proceedings, eliminating duplication of efforts in the discovery process, wasting judicial resources and reducing the likelihood of inconsistent rulings on individual cases.

The fires began on December 4, 2017, and caused extensive damages in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. The fires burned more than 300,000 acres, destroyed more than 1,300 structures, and caused more than 200,000 residents to evacuate their homes. By denuding the hillsides and damaging the soil, the Thomas Fire triggered the subsequent “Thomas Mudslides”, which hit the town of Montecito on January 9, 2018, killing over 20 people and destroying over 100 homes. The “Thomas Mudslide” cases are also included in the JCCP.
