Studies from Georgia Institute of Technology in the Area of Insurance Described (Impacts of Publicly Funded Health Insurance for Adults On Children’s Academic Achievement): Insurance

Health Policy and Law Daily

2023 JAN 18 (NewsRx) -- By a News Reporter-Staff News Editor at Health Policy and Law Daily -- Investigators publish new report on Insurance. According to news originating from Atlanta, Georgia, by NewsRx correspondents, research stated, “Publicly funded adult health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has had positive effects on low-income adults. We examine whether the ACA’s Medicaid expansions influenced child development and family functioning in low-income households.”

Financial supporters for this research include Spencer Foundation, NIH Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development (NICHD), UConn Office of the Vice President for Research, Association of Education Finance and Policy.

Our news journalists obtained a quote from the research from the Georgia Institute of Technology, “We use a difference-in-differences framework that exploits cross-state policy variation and focus on children in low-income families from a nationally representative, longitudinal sample followed from kindergarten to fifth grade. The ACA Medicaid expansions improved children’s reading test scores by similar to 2% (0.04 SD). Potential mechanisms for these effects within families are more time spent reading at home, less parental help with homework, and eating dinner together.”

According to the news editors, the research concluded: “We find no effects for children’s math test scores or socioemotional skill development.”

This research has been peer-reviewed.
