Oct. 30--North Carolina Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Mike Causey announced this month that the Stantonsburg/Moyton Volunteer Fire Department will be receiving improved fire ratings in 2020.
According to a release from the office, an inspection by officials with the Office of State Fire Marshal was conducted as part of the North Carolina Response Rating System that assesses proper staffing levels, sufficient equipment, proper maintenance of equipment, communications capabilities and availability of water source.
Moyton, a rural district, has had a rating of 6/9E since 2014. That will be raised to 5/9E on Jan. 1. Stantonsburg, a municipal district that has had a rating of 6 since 2014, will have a new rating of 5 as of Jan. 1, 2020.
"I'd like to congratulate Chief William McMurray for the department's performance and for the hard work of all the department members," said Causey. "The citizens in the town of these districts should rest easy knowing they have a fine group of firefighters protecting their property in the case of an emergency."
Improved fire ratings can mean lower homeowner insurance rates.
"The lower the rating, the better the insurance rates," said Wilson County Emergency Management Director Gordon Deno. "When you are getting down to a 5, that is really good."
