Sports briefs for Saturday, April 8

Kokomo Tribune (IN)

April 08--TC's Williams to run at Cornerstone U.

Tri-Central track and field senior Brielle Williams is set to sign her letter of intent with NAIA school Cornerstone University next Wednesday.

Williams is a four-year letter winner with the Trojans' track and field squad, running in the 1,600 and 3,200. She'll also run cross country with the Golden Eagles.

Located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Cornerstone University is a member of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.

O'Brien to meet fans in Logansport

LOGANSPORT -- Former Indianapolis Colt Kitt O'Brien will be in Logansport this week to sign autographs at a local business.

O'Brien will meet and greet fans from 3-5 p.m. Wednesday at Ed Nason Insurance Group at 419 E. Market Street in downtown Logansport. It is a free event and everyone is welcome to attend.

"It's been awhile since I've been back around the community," O'Brien said. "I come home to visit family and what not but it's been awhile since I've been out in the community. I'm excited to see a lot of people."

O'Brien finished last season on the Colts' practice squad the final three weeks of the season. He is currently a free agent.

"They didn't resign me with a futures contract," O'Brien said. "With all of the uncertainty in the front office I'm a free agent again. My whole career I've been a free agent. I hired a new agent [Jeff Jankovitz] a couple weeks ago and am playing a couple new avenues and we'll see what shakes out."

O'Brien, 26, a 6-foot-5, 325-pound offensive guard, is a Lewis Cass and Ball State product.

"I've been working out every day and am in pretty good condition," O'Brien said. "My life consists of constantly checking emails and phone messages."

Peckinpaugh steps down at McCutcheon

LAFAYETTE -- Longtime McCutcheon boys basketball coach Rick Peckinpaugh announced his retirement on Friday, the Lafayette Journal and Courier reported.

Peckinpaugh spent 32 seasons with the Mavericks, compiling a 477-269 record that included 12 sectional championships and five regional crowns along with a Class 4A state runner-up finish in 2016.

Last season, the Mavericks went 23-3, falling to Carmel 68-61 in the regional semifinals. McCutcheon returns one of the state's top players with point guard Robert Phinisee, who will be a senior in 2017-18.

McCutcheon beat North Central Conference rival Kokomo twice last season, including knocking the Wildkats out of the sectional, 78-56.
