Affordable Care Act premiums for Wisconsinites to rise hundreds a month if tax credits allowed to expirePremiums are due to rise fastest for older residents and families.
More than 270,000 people in Wisconsin will see their health insurance premiums skyrocket if Congress can't agree to extend subsidies for Obamacare health care plans. Nationwide, up to 17 million Americans could see their premiums increase.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Biden administration boosted the subsidies for health care plans on the Obamacare exchanges. The subsidies made the plans much more affordable, and millions of Americans signed up. President Donald Trump's "big, beautiful bill" got rid of those subsidies. Now that prices are creeping up for constituents, some Republicans may be regretting their votes for that massive bill over the summer.
Democrats in the Senate have refused to vote for a funding bill until those Obamacare subsidies have been restored. This is what has led to the government shutdown. Many Republicans would like to vote to extend the subsidies but want Democrats to vote to reopen the government first.
