Roof destroyed in Augusta Twp. house fire

Jun. 24--AUGUSTA TWP., Mich. -- A family was displaced Wednesday afternoon when a fire destroyed the roof of their rural Augusta Township home.

Fire crews were called at about 3:25 p.m., June 19, to a farm home in the 11000 block of Butler Road after the family reported heavy smoke coming from their walk-in attic, Augusta Township Fire Chief Dave Music said.

The family evacuated the home safely prior to fire crews from multiple departments arriving at the scene, Music said.

The fire is believed to have started on the front porch before advancing to the attic, Music said. The heat within the attic eventually caused the fire to breech the roof, destroying half of it, he said.

With the assistance from the Pittsfield Township, Ypsilanti Township, Milan and Sumpter Township fire departments, crews were able to contain the fire to the attic of the home and prevent it from spreading to the home's living areas, Music said.

"The cooperation and teamwork working alongside the other fire crews was wonderful and is likely the reason why the home is still standing," Music said.

Firefighters assisted the family in retrieving items from inside the home to prevent further smoke and water damage, Music said.

The family is being assisted by the American Red Cross while their insurance company assesses the damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. One firefighter was treated at the scene for heat exhaustion, Music said.
