Robert “Bob” L. Mccauley

Intelligencer Journal (Lancaster, PA)

Robert "Bob" L. McCauley, 86, formerly of Hearthstone Road, Lancaster, entered into rest on Monday, November 14, 2016 at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim, where he had been a resident since April 2015. He was the husband of Erma M. (Mooney) McCauley. They were married 66 years on October 1st.

Born November 4, 1930 in Lancaster, Bob was the son of the late E. Roy and Mae E. (Rapp) McCauley, Sr. He was a graduate of the former Millersville-Manor High School in 1948. A member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Millersville, he was also a member of the former St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Lancaster. Bob was a Veteran of the U.S. Naval Reserves and was also a member of the Millersville Area Jaycees. Earlier in life, Bob had worked at Prudential Insurance and for Lancaster Newspapers, Inc. in Classified Advertising.

In 1970, he purchased a building in Millersville that had been erected in 1868 as a scales house for the Millersville Turnpike. The building remained a wagon repair and harness shop until it was converted into apartments in the 1920s. Bob pursued a dream and had the building gutted and renovated to become the Barn Door Restaurant, which he opened in May of 1971. He continued to play an instrumental role in its operation until just recently. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Tavern Association and the Lancaster County Restaurant Association.

As a business owner in Millersville, Bob was a supporter of many community and charity events. He was a midget football coach when his son was a player and was part of the group that was responsible for getting the football program started at Penn Manor High School in the early 1970s. He and Erma loved to support their children's and grandchildren's school and sporting events. Bob was a car enthusiast, having worked as an automobile salesman early in his career. He was proud of the many cars that he owned and was particularly fond of his 1950 MG TD.

Bob and Erma loved to travel and enjoyed annual trips to Florida to be with relatives and friends during the winter. They spent their time sightseeing, playing tennis, going to the beach, and often went to spring training to see the Phillies in Clearwater or the Dodgers in Vero Beach. During baseball season he and Erma followed the Phillies on TV faithfully. They were also fans of the Lancaster Barnstormers, which they had supported since the team's inaugural season.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Erma are three children: Michael R. McCauley married to Judy, of Elkins, WV, Susan E. married to Donald B. Martin, of Millersville and Gary W. McCauley companion of Glenda Waltman, of Pequea; five grandchildren: Adam Martin, Katherine Martin, Laura Nord married to Derek Nord, Ian McCauley, and Lea McCauley married to Dr. Jonathan Martin; one great-granddaughter, Harley Nord; and two siblings: E. Roy "Mac" McCauley, Jr., of Harrisburg and Eleanor Johnston, of Lititz. He was also preceded in death by a brother, K. William "Bill" McCauley in 2012.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Bob's Funeral Service to be held at the Andrew T. Scheid Funeral Home, 320 Blue Rock Road, Route 999, Millersville, PA 17551 on Monday, November 21, 2016 at 2PM with Rev. Constance Mentzer officiating. There will be a viewing held at the Andrew T. Scheid Funeral Home-Millersville on Sunday afternoon between 2-4PM and again on Monday afternoon between 1-2PM. Interment will be held in the Millersville Mennonite Cemetery, Millersville, PA. Kindly omit flowers. Memorial Remembrances can be made in Bob's memory to the Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, PA 17603.
