Rep. Veasey-Lead Resolution Condemning Trump's Harmful Plan to Cut Medicaid Passes House

WASHINGTON, Feb. 8 -- Rep. Marc Veasey, D-Texas, issued the following news release:

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution (H.Res 826) led by Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33) that expresses disapproval of the Trump Administration's illegal Medicaid block grant plan, a plan inviting states to cap and slash the Medicaid program. This harmful plan would essentially allow states to receive a waiver to block grant their Medicaid programs for certain low-income Medicaid recipients, and have the impact of weakening the entire program and pushing Medicaid recipients off their much-needed, life-saving health care coverage.

"These block grants are just the latest in a slew of attempts by this Administration to gut the Affordable Care Act--and the numerous coverage expansions that it has offered to millions of Americans, of all ages and backgrounds, who were unable to gain affordable coverage before--and the millions more who could gain coverage if my home state of Texas expands Medicaid," said Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33). "That is why I am proud to lead this resolution that affirms our majority's strong opposition to removing the expanded protections that the Affordable Care Act has provided, because affordable and accessible health care for all is a right."

Veasey's resolution, which passed the House, sent a strong message to the President: the representatives of the American people do not support this Administration's attempt to reduce access to health care by turning Medicaid into an illegal block-grant program," said House Majority Leader Hoyer (MD-05). The resolution is supported by various organizations including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, The Leadership Conference Education Fund, The Catholic Health Association of the United States and the NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice.
