Rep. Schweikert Joins Colleagues in Requesting Major Disaster Declaration for Arizona

WASHINGTON, April 3 -- Rep. David Schweikert, R-Arizona, has issued the following news release:

Congressman Schweikert joined a letter in support of Governor Doug Ducey's Major Disaster Declaration request sent to the President. The Major Disaster Declaration will provide additional resources for the state of Arizona to combat COVID-19.

"While combatting COVID-19, we must ensure our state is properly equipped to protect the health and safety of Arizonans. I support this request from Governor Ducey and hope the President can quickly approve this assistance for our state. Our community is strong; we must continue to provide resources to every Arizonan in need during this difficult time."

Dear President Trump:

We are writing in support of Governor Ducey's request for a major disaster declaration for the state of Arizona.

On March 11, 2020, citing declarations by the World Health Organization and the Department of Health and Human Services, Governor Ducey declared a state of emergency in Arizona due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

On March 23, 2020, Arizona had reported 235 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and two deaths attributed to the virus. As of April 1, 2020, Arizona had confirmed 1,413 cases of COVID-19 and 29 deaths attributed to the virus. This exponential growth of infections in our state threatens the public health and safety of all Arizonans and requires additional action in order to avoid overwhelming our healthcare providers.

Pursuant to the provisions of Section 501 of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act, 42 U.S.C. Sec.Sec.5121-5207 (Stafford Act), and implemented by 44 C.F.R. Sec. 206.35, we ask that the state of Arizona receive a major disaster declaration.
