Rep. Quigley Issues Statement on House Republicans’ Bill to Repeal Affordable Care Act

WASHINGTON, March 7 -- Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Ill., issued the following statement on the American Health Care Act, House Republicans' bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act:
"Yesterday, House Republicans' debuted their bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Seven years in the making, the objectives - and consequences - of the American Health Care Act come as no surprise. Instead of making care more affordable and accessible, Republicans have introduced legislation that will expand subsidies for the wealthy and cut coverage from the working poor.
"This misguided bill will be paid for in one of two reckless ways: by stripping care from the most vulnerable in our society or by ignoring the financial repercussions and allowing the national deficit to implode. Additionally, moving forward with this legislation without waiting for a CBO score that would help Americans and Members of Congress assess the economic impact is the epitome of fiscal irresponsibility.
"Polls have consistently demonstrated that the majority of Americans want their representatives in Congress to improve the Affordable Care Act, not destroy it; and for the past seven years, we have had the opportunity to do just that through bipartisan compromise. Instead of building on the undeniable progress made by the Affordable Care Act, this new bill will move us backwards by denying care for millions of individuals by increasing costs, threatening Medicare's stability, defunding Planned Parenthood, and allowing insurers to charge more or deny coverage to those with pre-existing conditions. This is not what the American people want or deserve."
