Rep. Eshoo Hails Passage of Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act

WASHINGTON, March 27 -- Rep. Anna G. Eshoo, D-California, issued the following news release:

Congresswoman Anna G. Eshoo (D-CA) traveled to Washington, D.C to vote for the passage of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to help the American people and our nation's health care workers confront the COVID-19 pandemic head on and to stabilize our nation's cascading economy.

"This historic $2 trillion legislation, the largest relief package in American history, will address the many challenges we face," Eshoo said. "For the millions of Americans filing for unemployment benefits, for the healthcare workers making daily sacrifices on the front lines, and for the small businesses that are shuttered, I'm proud that the CARES Act puts families and workers first. Through a significant expansion of unemployment insurance, expanded small business loans, and a $100 billion 'Marshall Plan' for our health care system, this legislation will save lives, stabilize families and workers across the country, and bring confidence to the American people."

As Chairwoman of the Health Subcommittee, Congresswoman Eshoo championed multiple provisions of the CARES Act including a provision establishing a Ready Reserve component of the U.S. Public Health Service Corps to support the delivery of health care, and a provision authorizing the Food and Drug Administration to collect information about the foreign manufacturing of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) to prevent drug shortages. Congresswoman Eshoo also secured billions of dollars in new funding for the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) to bring manufacturing of API and vaccines back to the United States. Other priorities championed by Congresswoman Eshoo in the CARES Act include expanded unemployment assistance for American workers, including gig economy workers.
