Rep. Bourdeaux Joins Presidents Biden, Obama at Signing of Executive Order to Expand ACA Coverage for 5 Million Families

WASHINGTON, April 5 -- Rep. Carolyn Bourdeaux, D-Georgia, issued the following news release:

Congresswoman Carolyn Bourdeaux (GA-07) joined President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Barack Obama, and select House Congressional Members at the signing of an executive order to expand healthcare to 206,000 Georgians and millions of Americans.

"Expanding access to healthcare is one of the most important things Congress can do for families," said Congresswoman Carolyn Bourdeaux. "This small technical change will have an enormous impact on millions of families and ensure more people have access to affordable care."

The executive order aims to fix the "family glitch," an issue with how the federal government calculates eligibility for Affordable Care Act subsidies that affects 5 million Americans and 206,000 Georgians. Currently, individuals are eligible for subsidized health insurance if their employer-based coverage rises above a percentage of their household income. Unfortunately, this method only calculates the net increase to the policyholder and not the family unit, which can make even small percentage increases extremely burdensome to large families.

Congresswoman Bourdeaux is a champion for affordable and quality health care access. Rep. Bourdeaux led the charge to expand Medicaid access in Georgia and introduced the Medicaid Saves Lives Act in the House. She also worked tirelessly to ensure Medicaid expansion was included in the Build Back Better Act.

In January, Congresswoman Bourdeaux led the Georgia Congressional Delegation in calling on the Administration to block a request by Georgian Republicans to opt-out of using the Affordable Care Act website, Healthcare.gov.

Recently, Congresswoman Bourdeaux helped pass new legislation that caps insulin at $35 per vial and joined her colleagues in urging the Administration to fix the family glitch.
