Rep. Bonamici to Continue Leadership for Climate Action on Science, Space, and Technology Committee

WASHINGTON, Feb. 19 -- Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, D-Oregon, issued the following news release on Feb. 18, 2021:

Today Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) announced that she will serve on the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee's Subcommittee on Environment and Subcommittee on Energy.

As a senior member of the Committee, Bonamici is responsible for crafting policy to scale up clean energy investments, strengthen climate science, advance ocean climate action, and more. Her work will also support research at the Environmental Policy Administration, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Department of Energy.

"We have an opportunity and an obligation to solve the climate crisis, and it is an honor to continue serving as a senior member of the Science, Space, and Technology Committee at this critical time when we will advance bold policies to protect our planet," said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. "Last Congress, I helped author a comprehensive, science-based plan to reach net-zero emissions no later than mid-century and net-negative thereafter. I look forward to working with Chairwoman Johnson to implement our Climate Action Plan. We must mobilize the research and investment needed to reduce emissions, build a 100 percent clean energy economy, create good-paying jobs, and advance meaningful policies to protect the health of our ocean.

As we strive to protect Americans facing severe public health threats from the pandemic and climate crisis, it is critical that policy decisions be based on the best available science. The committee will be working to restore the role of science in public policy, reestablish scientific integrity across federal agencies, and rebuild our federal science workforce."

Bonamici has been a member of the Science, Space, and Technology Committee since 2012. She is a leader on marine energy, protecting the health of our ocean and estuaries, ocean climate action, defending science from political attacks, and improving NOAA's response to sexual assault and harassment. Bonamici is also the only member from the Pacific Northwest to serve on the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, where she helped create the Climate Action Plan.
