Prepaid wind policies should stay covered

Palm Beach Post (FL)

I have a wind policy that renews in December every year. I have been paying exorbitant rates to maintain this policy and have never filed a claim. I have just received a notice from my wind insurer, Maison Insurance Company, that my policy will be canceled on June 29. This is so even though all premiums have been paid in full since December, 2021. The company accepted huge, inflated premiums when virtually no risk existed and cancelled the policy exactly at the time when the covered risk becomes a viable reality. The letter I received indicates the company is canceling 3,300 policies to maintain "the financial ability of the company." In my opinion, an insurance company should not be allowed to terminate its contractual obligations during the pre-paid term of the policy unless the company declares bankruptcy.

Paul Stark, Jupiter

Editor's Note: Although lawmakers are in special session to address property insurance issues, the state Office of Insurance Regulation approved an agreement earlier this month to allow Maison Insurance Co. and two other firms to cancel 68,200 policies.

Pass laws to end presidential corruption

According to recent polling, 84% of voters -- Republicans and Democrats alike -- agree that no president, regardless of party, should be able to obstruct and undermine the will of the American people, or exploit weaknesses in our political system for their personal gain. In our polarized politics, that bipartisan support is a huge deal.

So what can we do to protect our democracy from presidential corruption? Pass bold legislation like the Protecting Our Democracy Act, which would prevent future abuse of presidential power and corruption, increase transparency, and ensure presidents can be held accountable. If the average person used their public office for personal gain, they'd go to jail. So why should the president be treated differently? I'm urging Congress to pass the Protecting Our Democracy Act. We must prevent future presidents of any party from abusing the power of their office.

Frances Lennane, Boca Raton

Replacement a part of evolution

Re the recent column by Thomas Knapp: No group of people can, or should, try to remain ethnically monotonous. It just develops inbreeding, more risk of congenital defects and handicaps that harm individuals' ability to be healthy and happy.

America was built by the Native Americans' clever agricultural achievements with corn and other plants. Cultural differences reached violence at times, but on the whole, they lived in tune with nature, and respected the land. Immigrants from around the world added to our variety with crafts, animal husbandry, innovation, and more and different societal customs. Not that everyone or everything was perfect, but we still, as a nation, have a good prospect at usurping the ancient Greeks as a democratic society. Let's not blow our chances with being afraid of change. Change is life.

Diane M. Starkey, Rochester, N.H.
