Of 20 popular cars, study says this is the most expensive to insure
Palm Beach Post (FL)
Nov. 20--You might assume a big expensive vehicle costs more to insure than a smaller one because if you total it, for example, it costs your insurance company more to replace it.
Makes sense, right? Well, a new survey might surprise you.
The Ford Explorer was the least expensive vehicle to insure and the Ford Focus was the costliest in a survey of 20 popular models by insuranceQuotes.com, affiliated with Bankrate.com of North Palm Beach.
The survey looks at coverage costs in proportion to the vehicle's purchase price, but in this case the Focus cost more to insure in absolute premium dollars too, researchers found.
Why? Among other things, big vehicles may protect better against injury. But it may also have a lot to do with who's behind the wheel: Less experienced drivers tend to get into more accidents, and tend to drive less-expensive cars.
"We do know for the more expensive vehicles, they're typically driven by older consumers who can afford them," said Laura Adams, senior analyst for insuranceQuotes.com.
