North Texas storms produce hail but no tornadoes

Fort Worth Star-Telegram (TX)

March 24--FORT WORTH -- Storms that could have produced tornadoes in northern Tarrant County moved through the populous area Wednesday night, dropping hail up to an inch in diameter.

A tornado warning was issued briefly about 9 p.m. for Haslet, Saginaw and far north Fort Worth. There were no reports of a tornado, but the storms "showed some pretty strong indications" of rotation on radar as they crossed Interstate 35W, said Ted Ryan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

The storms weakened as they passed through Keller and into Grapevine, where tornado sirens sounded.

The weather service received two reports of wind damage in the Saginaw area, to a barn and a recreational vehicle, Ryan said.

The bad weather dumped large amounts of hail across the area, from Benbrook to downtown Fort Worth to Plano.

"Most of the hail was an inch or less in diameter," Ryan said. "Typically, quarter-size hail doesn't cause any damage to cars or roofs. It has to be a little bigger before you get those issues."

Parts of Denton and Collin counties were blanketed with hail Wednesday night, some the size of golf balls.

The storms followed a pounding with hail last week in parts of North Texas. The Insurance Council of Texas estimates damage from last week's hailstorm in the Fort Worth area will reach $600 million in auto and property claims.

A strong line of thunderstorms brought hail and high winds to the DFW Metroplex late Wednesday night.

Oncor Power spokeswoman Khristen Jones said there were no major storm-related outages. Jones said Oncor knows that few outages occurred but didn't have an exact number early Wednesday.

The weather should continue to warm up Friday and Saturday, but another cold front may arrive Saturday night, bringing a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms.

According to the weather service, light rain may fall the morning of Easter Sunday, followed by a sunny afternoon with highs in the mid-60s.

Ryan said rainfall totals at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport are normal for this time of year.

Staff writer Christian Boschult contributed to this report.
