New Pharmacy Technician Program Offered by Phlebotomy Career Training

PR Web

Garden City, MI (PRWEB) November 04, 2015

The State of Michigan Proprietary School Unit has just approved our Pharmacy Technician Program. This program is 115 hours and students who take this program will be eligible to sit for the State of Michigan licensing examination for Pharmacy Technician. The State of Michigan has made it mandatory for all pharmacy technicians to be licensed. Pharmacy Technicians may obtain temporary licensure through the pharmacy where they work. However, after 210 days, they must sit for the State exam. Phlebotomy Career Training school helps prepare students to sit for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board Exam. Students who take the course at Phlebotomy Career Training and pass will be eligible for FULL LICENSURE through the Michigan Board of Pharmacy. The student must take the exam and pass within a range of 1400-1600. The exam is timed for 90 minutes. Upon successful completion of the exam and the application process, the letters in front of the Pharmacy Technicians name will be CPhT (Certified Pharmacy Technician). Phlebotomy Career Training is pleased to offer the Pharmacy Technician course for only $999 and our online option is now only $600.00. The online option is a great choice for those who have experience but just need the certification.

What is the job description for a Pharmacy Technician?
Pharmacy technicians, under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, help the pharmacists provide medication and other health care products to patients and consumers. Technicians usually perform routine tasks to help prepare prescribed medication, such as counting tablets and labeling bottles. They also perform administrative duties, such as answering phones, stocking shelves, and operating cash registers. They perform these functions in a variety of settings such as but not limited to hospitals and clinics, community pharmacies and drug stores, and managed health care facilities.

Pharmacy technicians' responsibilities include the collection, organization, and evaluation of patient information, the management of medication distribution, and providing drug information and education to the patient or consumer. The pharmacy technician will be given the task of preparing, dispensing, distributing, and administering medications under the direct supervision of the pharmacist. The technician must have a complete understanding and appreciation for the use and side effects of prescription and nonprescription drugs used to treat common disease states. They must also demonstrate ethical conduct and maintain confidentiality of patient information.

Pharmacy technicians can perform these tasks in large health systems, hospital and clinic pharmacies, retail pharmacies, home health care pharmacies, nursing home pharmacies, and chain pharmacies. Non-traditional settings are also becoming more popular and technicians are finding employment with large medical insurance companies, drug manufacturing companies, drug wholesale companies, and as instructors in pharmacy technician training programs.

In a retail pharmacy setting, pharmacy technicians receive written prescriptions or requests for prescription refills from patients. They also may receive prescriptions sent electronically from the doctor's office. They must verify that information on the prescription is complete and accurate. Depending on state law, the technician may be given the responsibility to prepare the prescription, retrieve, count, pour, weigh, measure, and sometimes mix the medication. Then, they prepare the prescription labels, select the type of prescription container, and affix the prescription and auxiliary labels to the container. Once the prescription is filled, technicians price and file the prescription, which must be checked by a pharmacist before it is given to the patient. Technicians may establish and maintain patient profiles, prepare insurance claim forms, and stock and take inventory of prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Pharmacy technicians in hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted-living facilities have added responsibilities including reading patients' charts and preparing the appropriate medication. After the pharmacist checks the prescription for accuracy, the pharmacy technician may deliver it to the patient. The technician then copies the information about the prescribed medication onto the patient's profile. Technicians also may assemble a 24-hour supply of medicine for every patient. They package and label each dose separately. The packages are then placed in the medicine cabinets of patients until the supervising pharmacist checks them for accuracy, and only then is the medication given to the patients.

The most important characteristic of these pharmacy technician duties is the need for absolute accuracy and precision in both the technical and clerical aspects of the job to ensure patient health and safety.

Phebotomy Career Training is very excited to offer such a challenging and rewarding certification as Pharmacy Technician. Our goal is to prepare the students to function responsibly and safely in their job as a Pharmacy Technician. Professor Nancy Kimmel will be the instructor for the class. She has completed her Associates in Science, Associates in Applied Science in Nursing, Bachelors of Science, and PhD in Environmental Engineering and holds a Certified Hazardous Materials Certification through the since 2002. Currently she is working toward her Masters as a Family Nurse Practitioner and picking up another Bachelor's in Nursing. She has one year left to obtain both. She has been a registered nurse in Michigan since 2007. In lieu of all her accomplishments, Professor Kimmel was required to obtain her Pharmacy Technician License to teach the class. Therefore Professor Kimmel, took the exam through the Pharmacy Technician Board on Friday 8/21/15 and passed!. Students can feel confident that they will receive the best training in the field of Pharmacy Technician.

The new program will begin in November of 2015. We ask that all prospective students call our office to get more information regarding registration. Classes are expected to fill up fast. Please call 734-762-3220 for further information regarding the program and start dates.

Phlebotomy Career Training, LLC is a licensed proprietary school in the State of Michigan with license number: 8604000933. Phlebotomy Career Training has been preparing students successfully for rewarding careers in the health care field since 2009.
